Were the nuts over tightened, or turned the wrong way to remove? My guess is that the nuts were turned the wrong way to remove since it happened on the left side. Rule of thumb: to remove lug nuts, turn lug nuts toward the back of the truck no matter which side of the truck your on. Edit...

I pull a trailer with my deuce tractor, I turned the pump up and it made a noticable difference!

Did you have to replace the studs?

Mineral spirits in a spray bottle works well.

There are 2" skids that run from the back of the trailer to the landing gear cross member, the skids attatch to several cross members along the way, however, the skids are designed to support the trailer when set on a flat surface and do not look like they would hold up to the rigors of holding...
