What did you get the gauge or the cable? If you reach up under the dash and disconnect the cable you can turn the rear input of the gauge by hand and tell if the gauge is bad. I'm guessing it's the cable.
Personally, I'd run it the whole length of the cab. The cab sits on the frame in the front (on a rubber pad) but is held up about an inch in the rear by the whole rear mount in between the frame rails.
So you are talking about flying/driving to huntsville and driving back to AZ in a new deuce towing a F150 right? Wow, there's alot of risk there. Good luck.
