    Another Day in Kansas

Thanks guys, I had some repair work done on my right knee. Doc tells me I am a replacement candidate in a few years. I laid off the big hikes and have quit running. I am hoping the lack of beating it will help. I need to buy a bicycle and get some elevated heart rate going on. I probably need...

How many miles can you go with a M1009

Either you have a very heavy foot, do a lot of idle time, or have a fuel delivery issue. I normally fuel around 350 miles, but do not really get worried until it is approaching 450 miles. My son ran my M1008 out of fuel and it was not nearly as bad as I expected.

    Another Day in Kansas

That satellite imagery is awesome! You can zoom in and actually watch the trail fade away to just fence lines. That is wild! I also see how to access that reservoir next trip out. This is remote stuff... Glen

    Another Day in Kansas

The link works, you are at the corner where we went south. You can scroll straight south and catch the east west road. The Otis Lake is off the screen to the west, but you can zoom out and catch it. Play with the topo and satellite imagery, that is neat country. Glen

    Another Day in Kansas

As you come south from the north, you will run into several old barbed wire gates that have not been closed for a long time. Each section seems to have a pasture entrance or two. For that last mile and a half, I saw no sign of tire tracks. I hope the map link works, as you look at Otis Creek...

m1009 daily driver, what to look for?

I guess I was lucky, I replaced the glow plugs in two trucks, rebuilt the starter in two trucks, put front pads on three trucks, replaced alternator belts on two trucks, had to put a flywheel on one, axle seals on two, had two out of 8 alternators rebuilt, installed two lift pumps and changed...

m1009 daily driver, what to look for?

Glow plug and fuel issues are most common.... followed by poorly done 12 volt conversions. In this case I would look very closely at the bottom of the truck to make sure we are not hiding rust holes with POR 15 to make it easier to sell. They are a great driving truck, cheap to repair and pretty...

    Another Day in Kansas

Your signature line is a classic! When I started over I had a 1977 2wd Blazer that had been rolled over. It was mainline transportation for 3 years of recovery.... How busy are you this weekend, right off hand, I cannot remember anything keeping me from going for a road trip. Glen

    newbie

I have posted before that I would rather drive a M1008 or M1028 than about any vehicle I have ever driven, I am getting that way with the M1009. They just seem to fit nice and drive nice. When I weigh what they are capable of against what they cost to run, it is pretty hard to beat. My life is a...

    newbie

Most likely you need a glow plug, probably should find it before it cooks the rest of them. You may have a weak injector and as the engine warms, it is not as noticeable. The 6.2 is pretty rough and ragged sounding cold anyway, they really do not purr like the 5.9 Cummins guys enjoy. Glen

To Bob or not To Bob?

I stumbled into the Bobbed posts and the look those trucks have is awesome! I am sure they are great off road too, I watch a video of a bobber rolling through an off road rock garden like a 4x4 pickup on a railroad bed, it was pretty impressive. I set out to get the truck to build a bobbed 5 ton...

Just some more photos from the day.... the last one is the "road" we took for 3.5 miles....

    Highway speed for M1009

Speed versus RPM calculator I like to use a calculator that uses loaded radius rather than tire diameter. If you figure 15 for the 31 10.50 and 2000 rpm on a 3.08 ratio, 58 mph, 2200 will get close to 65 and 2400 will get you close to 70. I run mine 65 all the time, but it would live a lot...

    Another Day in Kansas

8-) There are some areas just southeast of you that I would love to return to. It has been a long time since I have been to the Skiddy, Volland, Alta Vista area. It is some more Flint Hills region, but rougher than the Butler-Greenwood Counties area. Lots of old large cattle ranches and the...

    Another Day in Kansas

Sounds great, send me a PM and I will try to arrange a couple of days off. That St. Jaobs Well and Big Basin area has awesome trail history. I have not been to Mullinville to admire the newest political artwork for a long time. I would love to see his Obama renditions. :) Those Red Hills are...

    Another Day in Kansas

It was my trip to Coldwater that I saw my first live armadillo in Kansas. Those Red Gyspum Hills just east of there are stunning, to say the least. The history in that area is awesome. I think it was Coldwater that lost their county records and original courthouse when a couple of teenagers...

    M1009-M1008 front fenders?

I think all the sheet metal is the same, it is the heavier suspension that makes the difference.

    Another Day in Kansas

That is a fact, that is why I was super careful on this one. It might have been several years since the last truck came down that right of way, for well over a mile, there was no track, no rut, nothing to follow. I would have rather been in the pasture, at least the shorter grass would make...

    Another Day in Kansas

Actually...... I had a huge series of web pages all about Kansas. Every county courthouse, both active and retired, if it still stood, I had photos of it. I even had jurors boxes and judicial benches for most of them. As a side curiosity, I normally tried to find the Kansas State Seal in the...
