Yes, you can put it on with out the split ring. But it will not stay on. The split ring makes up one side of the rim.

BFR I have #10967 no date thought. rdsar2k check out tmvg.org one of there members has one of the best, if not the best looking M170 around. The letter rack are hard to find most were trashed. Do you have the right seats for it?
