HMMWV 4-man Soft Slant Back Feedback and Discussion

I'd appreciate feedback on this new look. This is a rough cover for the "humpy" frame. One is in 1000D Cordura nylon (that soft slant back kits used to be made from) and one is a prototype in mil spec PVC vinyl. I'm still figuring out how to sew this to completion. I thought it would be...

HMMWV 4-man Soft Slant Back Feedback and Discussion

Some people have asked what a frame that more closely resembles the military slant back with the humped rear would look like. In response, I'm working on a new frame that will be a totally new design for the frame and cover. I welcome feedback on this idea. It is a bit taller on the rear end...

HMMWV 4-man Soft Slant Back Feedback and Discussion

Here is what an existing cover looks like on that new frame design (spoiler: exactly the same as before, they are backwards compatible on purpose)

HMMWV 4-man Soft Slant Back Feedback and Discussion

Bringing up this old thread with some updated R&D. There was another thread but it was closed after the site was upgraded. Here is a new frame design that uses stronger tubing and connectors. Clamps are screw in (repurposed electrical fittings) and bolted. If anyone knows an available...

    Hello from NoVA

Your plan to change all the fluids is a sound one. Note that the Lube Order includes checking the portal hubs and several other "odd" places too, such as the differentials. A drain and fill of the differentials is fine, IMO, but you really should make the time to open the geared hubs and inspect...

Anyone know what this wiring is?

+1 feeds for radio tray. At least one of those wires is HOT 24VDC all the time. Be careful. Best to disconnect and remove them all and blank off the hole, unless you have another use for it intended. BDGR

    Hello from NoVA

Welcome Abram80. There are many HMMWV owners in NOVA. There is also a Nova HMMWV owners group on Facebook, if you are on that platform. There is, or was, a repair shop in Richmond that took in HMMWVs as well, if you are not up to all the wrenching. Welcome again and please keep us posted on...

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

Folks seem to be experiencing varied results. Please let us know how your efforts turn out. I am still waiting to attempt it myself. BDGR

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

Well, according to those 1980's G.I. Joe Public Service Announcements "Knowing is half the battle", so you've got that going for you. BDGR

    4 man Soft Top suppliers

I second the nomination of Blue Ox Tops. William Welch does excellent work. He cuts, sews and fits every top by hand. I have seen pictures and descriptions of other sources for 4-man tops and they always have some feature wrong, whether bad seams, too-short Velcro straps, ill-fitted and poorly...

The answer on where to find GEP engines and on prices for GEP engines

Have seen several people use this "source" for specific components. If you've the time and logistical capability, it makes great sense and yield many extras. BDGR

    Fixing the 1998 HMMWV

Congrats on your progress! As to paint, the RAPCO 383 series paints are an excellent match, made for HMMWVs. They will be more vibrant (though still tactical flat finish of course) because they are new, so you may want to plan on total respray. BDGR

    All glow plugs burned out.

Most of the time folks attribute it to the start box going bad. There are plans on this site to rebuild the smart box to a 'dumb' box, with a push button to send power to the (new) glow plugs. Many like this. It's not too hard to DIY if you've some soldering experience, or can find a friend to...

Just the driver's side or one on both sides? BDGR

    Front differential alignment

    What matters is... it works!

    Front differential alignment

And the engine/trans doesn't sit square either. Things are kinda jammed in there, but they work!

What have you done to your HMMWV today/lately

Looking good. Taking a break is usually a good idea, to let the wallet and back recover.

Getting to it... CAMO tip of the day

I think my DB2 needs a refresh too. I called a local place and they said just buy a rebuilt one online. It’s not worth their effort to rebuild mine. There’s a place in Pensacola on eBay that has them for $600 or so. They have very good feedback ratings. I’ll probably order from them. I’m going...
