    M35A2 Fuel Tank

Is there a problem with the fuel tank your truck has? Or is it missing?

    How old is too old

Based on the pictures, I don't think the tires look terrible, at least not as bad as my 27-year-old 14.5R20 XLs! If I were driving local roads with destinations less than an hour away, I'd consider replacing the steers now and do the rest later. But for your type of long trip I'd replace...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Thanks for the context! It seems that the reason that doesn't show up in more internet searches is that MPT describes the tire as a whole and not necessarily the bead specification, this case being a multi-purpose tire. Gosh tires are freakin' confusing o_O

    M35A3 wheel beadlocks

Just an update since I got some notes about this thread this morning - I did re-use the bead lock insert. Everything went back together with a 395 tire without issue. I took the truck on the road once since and didn't notice any problems related to the warped insert. If anything, it actually...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Well said! Although if I wanted to buy the experience I'd pay a tire shop to do the wheels :p I was going to do that but I'm beyond that point now, mostly because I don't trust the old 14.5s at all on the road. At least I'll be able to say that I did it!

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Maybe I'm getting myself confused with the bead types - NPT I've seen as "non-pneumatic tire", or what Google throws at me the most which is plumbing-related :p I guess it's just MPT or non-MPT? I'm not familiar with different types of tire beads. All I know is that Simp makes changing 5-ton...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

I'm on the tandem axle now, and things are moving a lot faster now that I'm using a good blade on my Ryobi Sawzall. To separate the bead from the clamp ring, I've found the flat end of a pick axe to be very useful, more so than the curved end of my big pry bar. I guess it's like a duckbill...

Is this a real surplus unit or a add on

Well, at least the crane will be okay? :p

    Deuce Jack Safety Questions

I got a pair of Pro Lift 6-ton jack stands off Amazon for about $45. They can be set to be tall enough to reach and hold the front axle with 395s mounted. The thing that annoyed me about them at first about them is the curved saddle top. I found that they will hold up one side of the front...

Those with A3 rims that don't leak... Clamp ring tightness

So far, all of my leaks have been related to brass fittings either failing or not being tight enough. My o-rings and grommets aren't leaking as installed per the TM :)

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Edited for stupid panic :p And some helpful information! So I panicked over the Oatey 30219 90% Silicone Grease I used. The Lowe's website says it's petroleum-based, but I confirmed over the phone with an Oatey tech that this stuff is safe to use on rubber o-rings. The equivalent product on...

Those with A3 rims that don't leak... Clamp ring tightness

I'd really like to know the engineering thoughts of this rim design. The 5-ton bolt-together wheels don't seem as daunting to work on, yet they are for a truck with half the cargo weight capacity? Whomever approved this design for the A3 was on the crazy train IMO.

Those with A3 rims that don't leak... Clamp ring tightness

I don't think it's leaking anymore because the tire pressure I just read isn't lower than it was 16 hours ago. I'll know for sure when I air it back up to 50 psi. This is my current setup: I'm using the existing air pipe and elbow, and installed a 3/8" x 1/4" bushing with a 1/4" x 1/8"...

Those with A3 rims that don't leak... Clamp ring tightness

I think I found the leak. Bubbles are coming from one of the fittings I used to install the Schrader valve. I'm going to tighten it up and see if that stops it. I soaped this several times and now it's making bubbles! :cookoo:

Those with A3 rims that don't leak... Clamp ring tightness

Correct - not taking my chances doing that stuff with an inflated tire!

Those with A3 rims that don't leak... Clamp ring tightness

Looking for some advice about another leak that's developed on a wheel I just took CTIS off of. I don't think it's the new elbow or fittings since they haven't bubbled in the leak test. What I did do in CTIS valve removal is remove the counterweight, which involved removing a nut from the...

    M35 rocker panel repair

I think I found the next vehicle for your collection :p The M39 and M809 5-tons should have the same rocker panels, so if you can find someone nearby with one of those that'll help.

    Dot5 or DOT 3/4/5.1

What are people doing that causes water the infiltrate the brake system? I can see frequent off-roading being one thing, but for mostly paved driving I imagine infiltration would be pretty low. That's not to say the truck's previous owner might've done some fording, though. I think some...

    Dot5 or DOT 3/4/5.1

I plan on running DOT5 in all my trucks. My dad runs DOT5 in all his trucks, though he's considering switching to DOT3 with his halftrack out of fear of messing up the motor with silicone brake fluid if the hydrovac malfunctions. Apparently that's not as big an issue with DOT3.

    M35A3 Owners unite

Do you remember if you manually pried the bead around the pipe stub, or did the bead just pop over it? My hope is that I could just jump on the rim again and have it just pop off with the bead popping over the pipe stub without getting caught on it and causing damage. The first wheel I did I...
