Totally agree with Gimpy here. Don't remove the gear pump. Rebuild it. Simple to do. I show how in my injection pump rebuild project. Plus if you decided to remove it you still need to fill the hole. You cannot just bypass the pump. The gear shaft is lubricated by the diesel fuel. So no fuel...

If you look at the cable you will see what looks like grooves or teeth cut into the rod. They basically "ratchet" against the collar which is on the dash. What you normally have to do to "release" the rod is to give it a slight "twist" and then it slides back in. That is to release the "teeth"...
The old connecting rod bolts are prone to failure. There is a 12 point bolt out there that replaces it. Several companies sell them. They are pretty pricy now though. Just look up "Hercules LDT 465" rod bolts.
