Yes it does suck. Taken too many people in my life, those I knew and those like Devin I wish I had known.......I hope his family finds some comfort from knowing how much he is missed even from those who didn't even have the pleasure of knowing him.
That item is not for "charging" a third battery, it is for eliminating the need for a third battery. When 12v loads are low, it is completely unnecessary to have a stand alone charging/storage system.
Double check the ground point of the box. It alond with the ABS harness ground through the lower right (as you face it) mounting lug, I have found two that still had paint on the faces of the spacers, which will prevent a good ground. Floating grounds cause a lot of trouble.

Make sure your air dryer is working well, fill the ether can.
As far as the brakes, there have been several threads on freeze ups, the solution has beeen the pressure protection valve freezing. Find the valve now so you know where to thaw it out. You'll be glad you did.
One of mine was a long term storage with 402 miles when I got it, one has 12K. Both are with 8.3T. I have wondered how that truck would be with the OD transfer case and a 5 speed stick. I have an extra Allison here (its listed in the classifieds for sale).
