The first question, is starter hot to touch or the solenoid.
You say it starts when everything is dead cold.
Try pouring ice water on starter and solenoid until its dead cold.
See if it will start.
Also 4 batts are better than two in cold weather but will crank with either system.Started at 19 this morning. no problem she fired right up.So post # 2 is not entirely correct they will start.
They are a bear to shift sitting still mine will do it now, but have to shift to drive then neutral a couple of times. It goes in easier moving. Stay below 20 mph and shift into neutral and shift transfer case.
