I have a premium membership but in the last couple days all I see are ads, ads, ads. I thought with the premium membership you did not see the ads? Ads are not all that bad when they are not intrusive but when I open a forum I do not even see the forum, the entire top section is ads!!!
There is still one running and we all know who has to have it, Yup, Jay Leno. Annnnd, He is the first owner! He bought the car direct from Chrysler. Can you imagine what that car is worth?!!!
Think about it, other than the M880 and CUCV's did you ever here a quiet military vehicle? And those two were converted civilian vehicles with stock exhaust systems on them. Remember the Gamma-Goat? The MEP-015 gen-set? Yeah, they were quiet.  :ROFLMAO:
A quarter standing on end, the best tools are sometimes the simplest. How in the world did you set frequency on a turbine set? And I am sure it was a very discreet set to run.  And I am sure it was also VERY fuel efficient.
Oh I am well aware of lining up outdrives! But in cars you have to remember that a manual transmission has input bearings AND a pilot bearing in the end of the crankshaft so that all has to be perfect alignment. Automatics have some room for play but if there is a misalignment I can assure you...
Sorry, I have not gotten around to working on this set yet. I do think I have given up on the engine swap based on the info given here, especially when I find out the generator section has no separate end bearing on the engine end. Possibly that was done for ease of installation of new engines...
I remember taking those pics. I had KP duty that day and it was cold and rainy but Scrounger was as positive as ever. He was determined to keep the dinner tradition alive after Cabell decided not to make the trip anymore and He put out quite the spread. I am sure at least half of it came out of...
Thanks for that info, I was not aware that the generator had no end bearings. That pretty much ends that idea. And Mike, you know if I drive down there from NJ for parts I am pretty likely to stay there!. I have another belt driven generator head I could use for that engine or I might use it...
I am going to be moving it in the coming week to do some cleaning of the yard and will probably get back on it soon. If I remember correctly it looked like someone had already replaced the pump at one time. My main concern at this point is parts. Timing buttons are made of gold, Injectors are...
Took 2 hours of searching back through my old posts but I found it! beginning of March 2011!!!!!
MEP-002 Rough Running
https://www.steelsoldiers.com/threads/mep-002-rough-running.66222/#post-792809
I will have to dredge up that thread. Went over the issues in pretty good detail at the time but it has been quite some time ago. The mower was one we had at work and the mower part of it is gone. It was a Jacobson three wheel front deck mower and it was a bear to run. Hard as hell to steer and...
Hadn't really given too much thought to all the 24 volt controls on the generator itself. I don't think that would be a deal killer since I could still run the original battery system as is and run the engine off of it's own battery separate from the genset. Could probably even mount a more...
I know this may sound like sacrilege but has anyone ever done a swap to a kubota 3 cylinder diesel engine? One of my 002's just will not run right and I have diagnosed it till I am blue in the face. I bought this from a guy who did the same thing and gave up and sold it to me cheap. I already...
I don't know about the latest units but the slightly older ones had gauges that were crap! they were inaccurate and for the most part did not work. The military has since the 70's always bought lowest bid and you get what you pay for. If I am replacing I am replacing with better gauges.
Sounds to me like you have a bad battery connection. The most likely one would be the ground to chassis connection. But check and clean all of the battery connections, both ends of each cable. Also check the voltage on each battery separately from positive post to negative post and be sure each...
It would start a deuce in 40 blow zero without any other starting aids! All you would need to do is get the Detroit powering that unit started first.
Chances are that even if you find out who made it you will not get anywhere with them if they are even still in business. They pretty much keep all that info within the system. They may tell you what manual you need to buy but now that you know it is a 400 hz. unit how much do you want to spend...
It is 400 hz, useless for anything except aircraft and certain military comm stuff. The voltage may be right but you need 60 hz, not 400.
Now, with 1000 amps at 28 volts you could arc cut 6" or thicker steel using 1" copper/carbon electrodes.
