Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

Is "soldier B" your neighbor that asked to borrow $4 and drive him up to buy smokes?

You are spot on for Delco Remy.

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

Stopped by to help Jerry at lunch today. Not sure he made it back to work, but here are the updates for this thread: Pulling up cylinder sleeve. We laid the truck on its side to pull the sleeves. Why is this sideways? Piston cooling oil squirt line visible, look closely. Best way to get...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

They will work short term, but not long term, and they do not meet the requirements for OEM use (corrosion resistance, water intrusion, cycle count, over-running clutch performance, contact welding, pinion hardness, etc...). Probably OK for what we use these trucks for, but $70 more you can get...

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

Non-turbo same thing, no vacuum. There is always yuck on intake valves. There is "reversion" of flow during operation due to harmonics, and thus slight spit-back occurs.

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

Hey, nice starter Jerry! That MF'er looks like one of those expensive, lightweight, long life, gear reduction units. Totally high speed!!!

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

There are no valve stem seals because there is no vacuum on the intake side. Pressure on both manifolds is either zero or positive.

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

I'll be there with a CO2 fire extinguisher ready to stuff down its throat......

    1985 M923A1 Over Heating

Rare, but could be the water pump also from what you are describing. An impeller can disintegrate or come off the shaft. Oil cooler is probably warm from trans heating it. You could pull a heater hose off, start it, and see if coolant pumps out, this would be a quick test to check water pump...

Have to bob my 1989 5ton not by choice. info and help needed

Not specifically. A lot of HOA's are an attempt to keep a neighborhood nice in appearance, and that is taken to different levels. I have seen it from just dues collection and no HOA requirements, all the way to no siding allowed (house must be brick on all 4 sides), minimum square footage, no...

Cummins 6CTA8.3 "Conventional" Alternator Bracket P/N

Same belt, as it mounts the alternator in the exact same location. I use a 24V 90 amp Mitsubishi alternator. They have internal temperature compensation (higher voltage when colder). I'm considering to offer them both as a kit, but pricing would be $400, so I would not expect many takers.

    Starter motor numbers

Yeah, it puffs like a steam engine. Poor kid just doesn't want to accept that a 40 year old engine needs a rebuild. Heck, my heart valve needed replaced at 40, so no way his rings should still be ok !!!

    Starter motor numbers

Reman? (*pukes on floor*). Mine are factory new, produced in 2015. I warranty them for 3 years unconditionally, including if you sink it in water. They weigh 1/2 of the old type, they don't crank slow when hot, they are super quiet, have a fabulous over-running clutch built into the drive...

What does your oil pressure gauge read

My 8.3 is just a needle-width above 0psi on the factory gauge at hot idle. But, when checking this with a mechanical gauge, it reads much higher, like even close to 30psi if I remember correctly. The military electric gauges suck, and suck even worse when hot, in my personal opinion. If I...

    Starter motor numbers

Yes and thanks GR !!! The hits just keep coming with you, don't they? I do have 12V and 24V for most all medium and heavy duty 6 cylinder diesels. No Blazer V8 diesel stuff.

Piston Rings Worn Out, Time for a Rebuild

The engine is 40 years old. You are lucky the rings have any tension left in them at all. It is not so much a matter of 1500 hours, or even your 50,000 miles on the odo, as much as the repetitive heat/cool cycles over time. They may not really be "worn out" (end gap), but the tension against...
