Freind has an M881 which has failed the uk MOT (3 times!!) seems the wheels have too much free play in the bearings. over 1/4" top bottom ((wheel tyre)) hand check.

This is the T.O. for lube I use (brittish army) ((OEP 220)) same as and equivelint is G.O. in all and everything transmission wise. (oep 220 = straight 90 w )
battery prob?
the way your orriginal problem happend seems to point at a faulty control (regulater) box. IF you have a "loaf of bread" cutout on the firewall ..suspect the windings in that OR its NOT opening when engine stops. (draining the batts from pull in coil)w ith fully charged batts...
