You could pull the doghouse/floor out of it and test drive it. You might be able to pinpoint things a bit better. Is it speed related, like only happens above a certain speed? If not, low range and short shifting could make your noise easier to find due to lower speed, less road and truck noise.

Yeah, that filter can be a PITA! @jatonka has spin on conversions for that filter and the pressure side too. Also has spin on oil filter kits. I did all but the primary on mine, wish I would have done it. I don't remember if it was available back then though!

There might be an issue with these two filters. 2 and 5 micron are VERY fine. A micron is 1/1000 of a MM. Normally, a primary filter is 15-25 micron and sometimes there is a secondary that is a 5 - 7 micron. Cummins deemed that a 10 micron filter, FS1000, was sufficient enough to clean the fuel...

That is a VERY slow leak, it will be hard to pin point. I don't think a smoke machine will put enough pressure into the system to make it leak. Even using windex it will still be a tough one to find.
