M37 Still Won’t Start – Not Sure What To Look At Next

Regarding the timing - even if it's way off - shouldn't I get some indication the engine is trying to start. I don't get anything at all that makes me think that any of the fuel is igniting. When I try to start the engine the sound and feeling I get would be the same thing you'd get if you...

M37 Still Won’t Start – Not Sure What To Look At Next

Regarding the Electronic Ignition, this is a very small unit that fits into the existing distributor assembly and simply replaces the mechanical points with an electronic version, so the shaft of the distributor is original. The Electronic ignition is made by Pertronix and seems to be made to...

M37 Still Won’t Start – Not Sure What To Look At Next

I’m not sure putting a small amount of fuel in a few calendars and trying it is going to work since the fuel need to be mixed with air to ignite, but it’s worth a try. Regarding the distributor and the 180 degrees, it not the distributor that I’m rotating it’s the shaft that extends into the...

M37 Still Won’t Start – Not Sure What To Look At Next

After thinking about the disappointing compression results and reading some of the comments, I figured I’d press on with trying to get it going again today. I decided to start at ground zero and hopefully not overlook anything. 1. Is there fresh fuel in the tank – YES 2. Is the...

M37 Still Won’t Start – Not Sure What To Look At Next

OK - Well today I started systematically going through all the various suggestions, and it looks like my number one issue is a major problem with compression (or the lack thereof). I measured each of the cylinders and the results were really disappointing. Cylinder 1 90 psi Cylinder 2 70 psi...

M37 Still Won’t Start – Not Sure What To Look At Next

The engine used to work (before I started messing with it - I know -- if it ain't broke don't touch it) but was not performing very well, sluggish and hesitant. The first thing I did about a year ago was to put in new plugs and subsequently a new carburetor from VPW. This seemed to help a...

M37 Still Won’t Start – Not Sure What To Look At Next

After months of work I still can’t get my M37 to start and could use some advice. Prior to doing all this work the vehicle ran but would just quit after 15-30 minutes. (usually at a very inopportune time). Here’s the parts I’ve changed so far: 1) Gas tank had rust – so removed and had it...

M37 idles fine but just dies unexpectedly when being driven.

The vent idea is interesting. I recently changed the flexible tube that goes between the filler and the tank to plug a leak; I think the issue started after I changed that. I'll have to take a look at the vent line and make sure it's not plugged. Great suggestion - Thanks,

M37 idles fine but just dies unexpectedly when being driven.

Ranger, The fuel pump is NSO, not an electric aftermarket type. I'll have to double check on the heat shield - I'm 99% sure it is there. Are you thinking vapor lock? Regarding the MV-161 - it really made a big difference, I used to have a big issue with hesitation when I'd step on the gas...

M37 idles fine but just dies unexpectedly when being driven.

With the electronic ignition (MV-161 from Pertronix) installed the condenser is removed. I do remember when I put the new electronic ignition in that I was a little concerned about the quality of the ground connection that the adapter plate had. Maybe that's making an intermittent connection...

M37 idles fine but just dies unexpectedly when being driven.

Hi Gary, Thanks for the tip. Now that you mention it - I think this issue of unexpectedly dying when being driven happened after I replaced the coil about 6 months ago. Prior to that I was having trouble getting the vehicle to start, could very well be a thermally related issue. Thanks, Ted

M37 idles fine but just dies unexpectedly when being driven.

M37 idles fine but just dies unexpectedly when being driven. I keep running into a problem with my M37 where I’ll be out driving it around town and it just starts chocking and dies. Here is what works well: I can start the vehicle with no major issues. (starts within 5-6 seconds...

    FM37 uel-Cell Electric Propulsion in 1968

I stumbled across some interesting information on a project the US Army Mobility Command did back in the late 1960’s regarding an all electric M37 using a Fuel Cell. The demonstration project was a success, but at the time fuel cell technology was still in it’s infancy. I have attached the...

Gar Wood MS-51352-1 Winch on M37

My USMC M37 has an oversize winch on it. I have no idea when or who put this on the vehicle, but it clearly was not original equipment. The unit has a label on indicating GAR WOOD as the manufacturer with a supply number of MS-51352-1. Does anyone have any information on this? I was told it...

    M37 PTO Oil Seals Leaking

The oil seals on my 51 M37 PTO are leaking badly. The PTO unit is the original DH-12530 that was standard on the vehicle. Has anyone had to change these and if so any tips? Also are parts generally available for this?

    m37 won't stay running, won't restart

Here is a link to a Pertronix document that specificially indicates the MV-161 is for 24V systems. See page 15. Notes 66 and 67 indicate 24V Mil-Spec waterproof systems. http://www.pertronix.com/catalogs/pdf/ptx/2007/ptx07_additional_apps.pdf

    M37 IIgnition Assembly Connector

I'm looking for a cross reference number or a manufacturer for the connector that screws into the ignitor (Distributor assembly). I have the receptacle part number from the ORD 9 SNL G-741 but that number is not getting me anywhere. The cable that attaches to the ignitor on my vehicle is not...

    m37 won't stay running, won't restart

My '51 M37 has had the same issues lately; starts immediately at times then refuses to start again. The M37 stranded me a few times requiring it to be towed home in disgrace. This situation was really frustrating me. Based on advice from a number of folks I started with the fuel system first...
