    That was dumb....

Broaching a piece of steel to dupe the lever would be somewhat expensive. But a simple hole in a (bent) flat bar with a threaded set screw hole to hold the lever from rotating would work - as long as the shaft were counter-drilled to accept the set screw. It wouldn't be quite as elegant as the...

    That was dumb....

I also busted one - and even with expert cast iron brazing including a thorough cleaning, preheat and anneal - the braze job only lasted around a year before it broke again. I was lucky - and spotted (2) replacement levers in the "unidentified" hodgepodge bin at a local surplus dealer. I would...

    oops Rags in Intake

Not exactly an uncommon problem - so don't feel too bad. My father-in-law is a retired fleet manager from a major power company. He managed a fleet of over 600 heavy trucks and tractors for over 30 years - so he has a bit of experiance with diesel engines. One of his projects after retirement...

Anybody have any specs to make spin filter adapters?

I've been lurking over this post - as I'm getting ready myself to convert (2) Detroit 3-53 engines over to spin-on oil filters using a factory type adapter. I don't see it as an ethical problem at all to post info on measurements of the interface for an adapter - after all, anyone capable of...

    Starting a 5 Ton M813 GT

I thought just about all the 5T trucks were fordable through fairly deep water - with appropriate maintenance afterward of course. How deep do you plan on fording your truck?

What was your best Gama Goat Exp?

In the spirit of not supporting a complete hijack of the post - my best memories of the Goat range back at least 20 years - when my Father-in-law owned it. We did regular desert picnic trips with all the kids out into the desert around Tucson, AZ - and participated in 4th of July parades on Mt...

What was your best Gama Goat Exp?

Like Bill posted - the data plate on the right side dash has all the delivery info. The registration number is also stamped into the aluminum on the front outside - far driver's side just under the windshield on newer build models. The description for the sale (and the value) depend on what...

    Funny GL Photo

A neighbor once asked me to give him a hand "repairing" the wiring under the hood of his 1T dually Dodge camper. When he popped the hood for me, I noticed that virtually ALL the insulation of every wire had been chewed away by K-rats, squirrels and rabbits over the 2 years it had been parked in...

    my deepest apologies

Welcome from a lurker and occasional "seagull" poster. I have to ask - what is the beast pictured in your avatar? It looks like you have the "old iron" bug. I also suffer from that disease - though I've let go most of my finished hit-n-miss projects. I still have a 1916 3HP Cushman I'm...

what to do with this winch??

If it's fiber core cable it works out to around 336 pounds for the full length - IWRC cable would be 370 pounds. Not as heavy as you might imagine - but a heck of a load to just pick up and drag out by hand!

    Gama Goat owner err herder

Maybe I'm not following your layout. The only top vent port on the radiator should be to the surge tank hose (item 2). Do you have another vent line?

    Gama Goat owner err herder

The 53 series Detroit engine is a wet-sleeve type, which tends to naturally cause cavitation and the buildup of coolant vapor in the cooling system. Without the top surge tank hose, or with the surge tank located in a different position, you will gradually build up gas in the top portion of the...

    Gama Goat owner err herder

This struck me as kind of odd - since I had never heard of any Goat running ester-glycol (DOT-3) brake fluid - since it sucks water into the system, and can cause corrosion. I don't consider myself any kind of expert on Goat history though - especially since my oldest parts manual listing brake...

    Gama Goat owner err herder

As an engineer working exclusively on military systems for the past 35+ years, I actually got quite a kick out of your custom solvent blend. I often combine solvents when working on antique hit-and-miss engines - and Marvel Mystery Oil / Coca Cola wouldn't be an unusual blend to consider. Keep...

    Gama Goat owner err herder

Sounds like "good work" to me - but I would probably pull the diff and open it up to see if it can be brought back up to driveable condition. BTW - there are 2 steering boxes to check out. In my own experience, the front box causes the most trouble since rainwater and condensation is routed...

Changing the Gama Goat oil and filter.

Forgot about this question until I was out filling tires and topping off fluids today. Both my 70 USMC Goat and my 71 Army tractor have 1/4-28 UNF x 7/8 steel hex cap screws ("bolts") holding the guards on. The cap screw heads are standard - 7/16 across the flats. I did notice that the USMC...

    Identifing a 3-53 for a Gama Goat

I'm sure a lot of Goat engine blocks have wound up at the scrappers aua I've got a spare Gama Goat tractor body that likely weighs in at well over a thousand pounds of aluminum. It looks to my wife like a burning pile for $100 bills - but I wouldn't dream of scrapping it.

    Prohibition on active auction links

So you are saying that the purpose for the rule is to limit competition on the auctions, to keep the prices from skyrocketing..."If you are looking for something - do your own research, and find it yourself"?

    liquid electrical tape

I've used it a few times. It's extremely fast-curing and useful when access for regular tape is limited. The unused portion doesn't last too long in the can. I found it to be "OK" - but prefer other insulation methods if they will work.

    Prohibition on active auction links

Hope this isn't an inappropriate place for this question - but I'm curious what the strategy is behind the prohibition against any comment linked to an active auction? I recently commented on a current GL auction on an item - and the comment was pulled by the moderators. No complaint - I don't...
