Recovery complete. Found a 2 hour shortcut via a new road cut by a drilling crew.
Vehicle was intact, no vandalism. Honda generator charged front 12V battery to 75% while I inserted 3/8 fuel line into fuel tank, followed by Airtex E8153 pump, powered by toggle switch up front tied into the...
Recovery, excellent idea. Were you born with all these good ideas or did you have to work for them? Let me guess. :-) I've been going through some of your posts. You're a bloody genius and from the reading, a gentlemen as well. Pepperoni pizza for you tonight, with extra cheese.
JPG's idea...
Partial recovery.
Made the 7 hour (much longer than expected) trip to the M1009 this weekend. Took what were considered to be the "essentials" for whatever one could expect to find under the circumstances. This is what we took and used:
generator and battery charger
Kano Aerokroil
Assortmant...
Rustystud, very good idea about moving to a more hospitable spot. Unit has a front loaded 13k winch with plenty of chain, cable, snatch blocks etc. Luck was with me in that the unit happens to be on the only relatively level ground found for about 200 meters either direction. From where I...
Seems to me there are a lot of unknown risks in trying to do an axle only field replacement so I headed to jacks military surplus in Tucson, looking for a complete differential unit. Even finding an axle on short notice proved to be a bridge too far.
Scored a 308 "working" differential from...
Royalflush55...so I was thinking the passenger side of the M1009 may be too close to the mountain side to allow insertion of a long enough shaft to reach through the passenger side of the housing - though the pumpkin- with enough length remaining to do the job of removing the broken axle. I may...
You guys all have great ideas.
The Chinook would be my first choice. :)
The 1 inch rebar is a good field fix, if it works. Not a sure thing, but worth a try.
Note to self is noted for 1" rebar. Along with sledge.
Its 3 hours to the trail head, 3 hours to the unit and then fix time. Then...
Yep, that would be nice. I worked the honda pits in baja when the first ridgeline appeared. We all thought it was a hoot watching Johnny Campbell with his famous 2 wheel smile outshine the 4 wheelers.
Pumpkin = entire rear differential housing assembly.
Yep, a big monster for a RZR. I removed the center pin and tried to hammer the axle back in so that the C Clip would release. Only had the handle to a Hi-Lift and a mallet to shove the broken axel piece towards the spider gear. Broken axle...
Guys, gonna need a little help here.
Broke an axle in the AZ outback. Way outback. Jeep trail 30 miles from closest road. No hope of assisted recovery short of a skycrane. Must be repaired in place. Unable to remove c-clip. 3.73 setup. No lift. Too much torque over rocks on a very steep...
