    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Hi Marcel, I think I may have looked at this part when we talked about it: VS-E5TX3006-M3 (To220 30A Version) Data Sheet I hope the Stripper is working for you. Give it plenty of time to dissolve. The other project I did took 40 hours of soaking in Stripper. Looking forward getting it moving...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Carbon Resistors are one of the oldest breeds of passive components. They are about 120 years old. Since then, the technologies, materials, manufacturing processes etc have advanced. One advantage of this progress was the ability to reduce the package size to achieve the same power rating and...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, The leakage current has increased from them sitting on a shelve, container for shipping etc. That's the reason why you fluke shows the capacitance it shows. They call reforming "Voltage Treatment Process" The 1KOhm (at least 10W) and 375VDC for 30 min to 60 min will bring capacitance...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, Found one more piece of info on your new caps: You have to perform a reforming after cap being stored before you can us them: 8. Storage Some characteristics of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor are temperature-dependent. The higher the temperature is, the more deteriorated the...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, Just for verification, you ordered 560uf 400V caps as replacement? Not accidentally 470uF 400V? Both, Kurt and You got 560uF / 400V installed:

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, The Nichicons we use, 100uF / 50V and 470uF / 16V come from one of their Japanese facilities and those have tolerances of 1% and less when they arrive here. ESR is also 1% and below. We check those when they come in, as they are certified and we have to certify our products Peter

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, this is pretty bad, I would verify Date Code with Newark. if date code is correct then those caps may have COVID 19 and need to be returned. I check all incoming parts and I would return those. I have seen this kinda thing more frequently in the last 15 years or so, where these large...

Is there a date code on the Nichicons?

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, Btw. Resistor values come in E Series standard value. For Gold 5% it’s the E24 Series and here we have only a 62K or 68K available. The “green” ring is either red or grey - I would say it’s grey. Peter

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Is this 20 mili (e-3) Farad or 20 mikro (e-6) Farad? The Chinese are not used to our numerical system. As to resistor, use this one here: https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Vishay-BC-Components/PR02000206802JR500?qs=LCMWAU1DZczPmOosrjwfLQ%3D%3D A few Kilo ohm up won’t matter, more important...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, it depends on how they dry out and where the safety relieve is located in relation to the terminals. That’s a science in itself. What is upper capacitance value your tester can test to?

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, the resistor would be then 65 KOhm 2W which are most likely bleed resistors to drain the DC Bus from around 300V to OV when the unit is shut down. The one in the picture is chipped. You may want look into replacing them too. KOA or Vishay would be recommended. Will be interesting to see...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, Thanks, just as I figured. These are 560uF caps. The values your tester came up with are most likely correct. And yes, they have a 20% tolerance, but all those caps are basically toast. Let me explain: The dry Electrolytic Capacitor in its construction and make up was invented around...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, the other thing which would of interest are the twelve e-caps. Do you have a ESR tester? If not just regular capacitance test would be fine and see what that yields. Thanks Peter

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, great job! When you strip the board, check the 4 resistors. The color strips are not clearly visible in the picture, but they look like green, brown, orange and gold. Gold stripe means they have 5% tolerance. Once you confirm colors then I can tell you what value they have. They carbon...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

The Fred’s and similar devices were designed for fast switching power supplies and the 60Hz they have to contend with here is more like molasses in comparison.

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, The lake of resin is conformal coating. Most likely a acrylic resin based conformal coating. This stuff here works quite well on getting the conformal coating removed: Conformal Coating Stripper this will make everything much easier when you strip all board completely you can then...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Marcel, I think it will be fine your rebuild. As long as we don’t miss any remaining defective parts or blown traces. The Vishay’s are an excellent choice and comply with: IEC 60384-8 IEC 60384-9 Which will assure they are very high quality caps. On the hyperfast freds you can also go with a...

    MEP-831a Inverter Overhaul

Since I called this inverter design “piss poor” in post #53 after Kurt’s report about the non existing inrush current limiter, I figured I am going to publish a properly designed powers supply for such an inverter but without any additional EMI filter for simplicity reason the safety/security...
