    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

On the road again!!! Paid the bill ($1,020) and picked up the M1009. She is shifting great and running great. Price about included a master rebuild kit, removal, installation, and a new torque convertor. For those in the Tidewater (Hampton Roads) area of Virginia, I used Rory and Sons...

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

Wrecker came and got the M1009 yesterday morning and at the shop today. The shop owner said, "That's a military vehicle isn't it. I saw the shackles then the plate on the door." Glad to hear he is a little excited about having it in the shop. Question - Is there anything that I need to be...

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

Well pulled the pan just in time for the sky to start pouring. In coastal VA we get the same amount of rain as Seattle but we get it literally inches at a time. I dropped the valve body just enough to put the pin on the rooster comb in the slot on the manual valve piston. The kick down solenoid...

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

So was able to get the spring compressed on the accumulator and the little e-clip back on the post - $30 later. I put the valve body back on and all went well so I thought. I now have forward movement in ALL gears including neutral. Park still works. From what I understand, I failed to...

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

Well finally got a dry weekend day where I had some time and tried to install my new parts. I am a little confused by the 2-3 accumulator recess and post. Mine appears to be at a slight angle as can be seen in the pics below. There also turns out to be a special tool to compress the...

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

Sorry for the slow reply. I did not buy an entire rebuild kit, just the seals and the new accumulator piston.

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

My parts came in today.....but I have a question! All of them - Accumulator and gasket - but which one? I could not buy the seal that goes around the accumulator by itself and had to buy a set which had more than I hopefully need. The two seals pictured by the accumulator are the...

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

The seal around the accumulator pump piston was not completely on and looked like it had been that way. One of my pictures above shows how it came out and the position it was in when I removed it. I am going to try replacing that first. If that doesn't work, I will have to decide to rebuild or...

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

Ordered my accumulator piston, which turns out to be aluminum, a new seal kit for it, and the upper and lower gaskets for the valve body. Will see if this is my fix!

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

I appreciate the note and insight. I am going to order some parts today. The local store just carries the whole rebuild kit for about $125 and I really think all I need is the gaskets for either side of the hard plate above the valve body and the 2-3 accumulator pump. Looks like I can get those...

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

Thanks - that's the best diagram I have seen yet! I see in this one it says to leave out the one check ball. Still looking to see if I can find an accumulator pump somewhere. These guys seem to have most of the parts Transmission Parts 3L80, 400 GM Rear Wheel Drive

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

Hopefully the fix will be relatively easy or this may be my first transmission rebuild or swap. The truck only has 61k miles on it. I found this diagram for check ball location http://mtech360.com/tmblog/?p=777 Some sites say not to put all the check balls back in place. Has that been the...

    Transmission slipping 1985 M1009 TH400

And so the saga begins..... This is a first for many things for me - first military vehicle, first diesel, first time working on automatic transmissions. I picked up the vehicle from a fellow SS member and it test drove okay but the trip home through the mountains brought on the below...
