Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I have seen most of the changes authorized for the Goat, but that one I have not seen. With no guard to protect it , it's a bad location. The fact that it rarely gets used makes me wonder why move it.

Can you provide us a MWO number or, better yet, a picture of the MWO it's self.

You can see those little steel tubes I was telling you about, in the water holes. They are designed to lesson the possibility of erosion to the block top by the water flow. When you order the gasket set be sure to tell them it's the aluminum block. They will say, HUH? The right gasket set...

All Detroit engines from this era were Alpine Green when received. If they were rebuilt they were repainted to OD. This paint is available at NAPA and is outstanding paint Drys to a glosy finish that wipes off easily. Here is a picture of mine in my "Little" test stand.

Saturn Surplus has brand new, in the box, radiators for $250.00 plus shipping. See it on your favorite auction site or call Saturn and ask. And as for the oil and crud in the bilge under the engine, put a rubber hose on the airbox drain tube and catch the slobber in a gallon can. A gallon...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

The valves are easy to get. Just remember to order the right size to fit the Goat pan and thread. I have had one on mine for years and it really is great. This is the one for the GOAT 3/4 x 14 tpi. Well worth the outlay of funds...

That is because the pictures are of cast iron blocks. They are different than the a luminum blocks. You have to spec an aluminum 353 if you order a gasket. The hard part is finding one. Detroit does not supply the aluminum (Goat) any longer.

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Sounds like it's working but I'd be a little concerned that the by-pass is still open and, that much, fluid is not circulating through the radiator. In the pic. you can see the second valve for the by-pass.(Little disc on the right) , Also, before you order a rebuild kit, check the block for...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Sure. The special silicone and tubes were for help in preventing erosion at the deck of the aluminum block. The gasket kits come with normal o rings for this purpose. I do not think you'll run it enough to cause erosion if you keep your cooling system clean. Pulling these engines is not a big...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

If it's coming out of the airbox drain it means it has bad liner 0 rings. That's the only way water/coolant can be there, unless there is a crack. Up on the deck there are o rings and fire rings. The aluminum block requires silicone inserts and tubes for the water passages. This is not shown or...

Nice Ride!! You just saved me some fuel. I had a hankerin' to drive my Goat today but watched this video and got my fix for the day. Sounds pretty darn good. It gets better when you add the windshield. Mike
