Do you have slow leakers on your truck too?

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Spring update! I just got the truck out of hibernation and checked the tire pressure. All but two tires held air. Over five months, one lost 7 psi, and another lost 15 psi. They were all originally aired up to 45. So I have two tires losing 0.05-0.1 psi per day. I don't think that's...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

It's been almost two weeks and the tires are still holding air, though this has been true for longer for the front wheels than the rear wheels since they were mounted first. I think I'll call them good and return the tools to their lenders (and add them to my tools-to-get list!). It's been...

I know what you're talking about: Like the trailer skirts and super singles, they reduce fuel costs by a little percentage. But remember that even a little percentage of a big number like fuel costs is a big number! Since your reply I added a "before" pic of the truck for comparison...

Tires are all FINALLY mounted! I've identified a leak at one of my new brass fittings that I'm going to try and fix today. It has thread sealer on it and I tightened it as far as it will go, but it's still leaking a little bit. The pre-loved tires themselves seem to be holding air and not...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

So a couple things as I near road-worthiness: 1) A Bauer wood/nails reciprocating saw blade from Harbor Freight will cut 160" of 14.5R20 XL sidewall before losing teeth. 2) I revisited my clamp ring seating method using two takeoff tires to set my wheel on. This time I used a low-profile...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Thank you! One of the things that encouraged me to start this project aside from dry-rotted tires was seeing the documentation of others who did it before me. There was a lengthy thread from awhile ago showing that it was safe to switch from 14.5R20s to 395/85R20s with M35A3 rims, and another...

I'm half-way done! It's amazing how much difference 3" of diameter makes between these tires! 50 psi 395 next to 45 psi 14.5 (365).

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

I learned something when mounting a tire on the rim yesterday. I thought it might be a good idea to use a couple take-off tires to help force the rim up through the new 395 high enough to put the clamp ring on. I laid these two tires on the ground next to each other and flopped my new tire...

Thanks for the context! It seems that the reason that doesn't show up in more internet searches is that MPT describes the tire as a whole and not necessarily the bead specification, this case being a multi-purpose tire. Gosh tires are freakin' confusing o_O

Well said! Although if I wanted to buy the experience I'd pay a tire shop to do the wheels :p I was going to do that but I'm beyond that point now, mostly because I don't trust the old 14.5s at all on the road. At least I'll be able to say that I did it!

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Maybe I'm getting myself confused with the bead types - NPT I've seen as "non-pneumatic tire", or what Google throws at me the most which is plumbing-related :p I guess it's just MPT or non-MPT? I'm not familiar with different types of tire beads. All I know is that Simp makes changing 5-ton...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

I'm on the tandem axle now, and things are moving a lot faster now that I'm using a good blade on my Ryobi Sawzall. To separate the bead from the clamp ring, I've found the flat end of a pick axe to be very useful, more so than the curved end of my big pry bar. I guess it's like a duckbill...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Edited for stupid panic :p And some helpful information! So I panicked over the Oatey 30219 90% Silicone Grease I used. The Lowe's website says it's petroleum-based, but I confirmed over the phone with an Oatey tech that this stuff is safe to use on rubber o-rings. The equivalent product on...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

So I discovered a shortcoming with this - make sure your fasteners are the same height as the reference ones otherwise you might break stuff! The new ones I got from Big Mike's are about 1/4" taller than the ones that came with the truck, and I didn't realize it until I was far into the...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Oh, my health isn't the issue. This is good exercise for me, even though I have no weight loss to show for it  So far it's taken all my free time to work on the wheels, free time that others feel should be spent elsewhere :p (They do have a point though sometimes!) So it seems that...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

When I'm done with this wheel I'm going to pause the project. It's been a huge time suck and has earned a place on the infamous "Honey don't!" list. Also, a couple tires I received have sidewall or bead damage, so I'm waiting for a reply from CSM to resolve that. I'm not planning on doing...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

I just got a 1700 psi peak pressure washer from Harbor Freight. It came with a detergent sprayer too, so I sprayed a Dawn mix on everything to degrease then turned the pressure all the way up. It got the GAA right off the inside of the rim, so that was easier than using a rag and drill brush...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

I trashed one of the new air pipe nuts trying to tighten it without a modified socket. I ground the socket down enough that the rounded inner edges didn't mess anything up. I reused the old one and torqued it properly with the modified socket. Anyway, I FINALLY got the rim out of the tire...

M35A3 Rim Restoration and Tire Swap Project (Picture-Heavy)

Tire is almost off. I don't have to worry about the air pipe anymore, though. I worked the rim enough out of the tire so that the air pipe nut was just past the bead lock insert. I cut a big rectangular hole in the sidewall with the Sawzall and got a wrench in there to get the nut off. This...
