Do a search on this site and there is a detailed thread on how to switch over to a HD solenoid instead of that light duty relay. Also you are one of many that have put in a GR starter and now had relays burn out. Since doing the trick I have not had any problems.

First off, did you put the smaller gear reduction starter in it or the old type?

I spent a lot of time under mine and looking at that wire diagram. I now know it well.:-D

Did you flatten the ears on the battery wire lug at the solenoid? It sounds like the purple wire from the relay is touching the battery wire lug. Here is a diagram of your starting circuit. http://www.ny-tactical.com/PDF-Files/StartingCircuit.pdf

So you replaced the relay the relay under the dash?
