Working On The M561 Gama Goat

So you were the source..we got them welded up last week, took less time to weld than prep. I was cutting the weld and base to keep height correct. Hand held cutoff die grinder was too slow, saws all is much better. I still need to dress down the weld, got a little peppery on me with being...

GTAW (TIG) is real fun. No sparks, slag or smoke. The WYSIWYG of welding. All welding is best when it is cool outside. Back to the topic at hand, I will make a pulling finger set for the 3-53, just because it will be needed by someone here. $500 tool.

Gentle? Mark had tried with a piece of 1-1/4" galvanized pipe, no luck. I used a piece of much heavier walled ERW tube, a little larger in diameter but twice the wall thickness. Even then, we cut off the mangled end contacting the liners...4 times :?. I reworked the engine support stands to...

And the Permatex Ultra Black gasket compound is still working great . It should, that is what my little turbo diesel uses, aluminum pan to cast iron block. Factory spec, although VW has their own proprietary blend, Permatex stuff is even better. This gasket joint has very little pressure.

At least the spin on oil filter adapter didn't leak ;). I have been looking all morning for those compression fittings online...no luck :(

The oil pressure sending unit line is like all other compression fittings on the 561, something odd and proprietary as it has coarse threads and a unique ferrule. It leaked as it has a limit to compression and the tube was compressed too much.

Cannot be any more difficult than the nuts holding a CUCV injection pump onto the timing chain cover ;) If you need me tomorrow, the wife is working so I have a kitchen pass.

The right rear mount bolt was stuck but the nut came off so that bolt gave a bit of drag on the lift out. It cleared fine. No redesign of metal or paint, if that was your question. No shedding of blood or hurt feelings either. Lots of sweat and even more oil soaked dirt. As in 3 gallons of...

The install was easier than expected. Only snag is the new mounts at transmission end need different shim counts as the double Cardan joint has a bit of bind.

Ah, so I was right. It is an MWO that removed the main buss connections from the Cannon plug. We are leaving the pins in place on the new engine as this Goat will never swim again. The socket on the Goat side of the connection was filled with white RTV, I pulled those out with a screw to give...

All straight weight OE-HD30, not a hint of Vermouth ;( On a serious note, the air box drain also handles piston oil drain back. When a 2 stroke diesel stops, a piston can be far above the intake port. Any oil on the side of the intake window can drain back into the air box. This is why the...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

Oh, yeah. It runs. Started on second pull, needed fuel priming. Then it ran but sluggish throttle. After a few seconds, throttle response was normal. Then we ran it to thermostat opened and released the clog of rust. Then we ran it some more to make sure it wasn't leaking. I did my...

An M37 radiator has the hose fittings in the wrong places and angles. But it will work as the engine will not see a load. A heater core would work. But not going up US 281 @ 55 MPH ;)

Steel fasteners in aluminum can corrode TIGHT. Using TIG to add an additional 1/2" of length to that broken bolt also heated it enough to break the corrosion bond. Basically, I made a weld stalagtite on the broken stub with ER70 S2 filler wire..a 70,000 psi tensile strength steel. Then my...

Aluminum blocks and overheating? Yeah, just had the same thing on a Scag Turf Tiger with a horizontal shaft Kohler. The head bolts could be removed without any wrenches. Aluminum expands 3X as much as steel with temperature so the block stretches the bolts. Now, another cheap and easy method...

http://igor.chudov.com/manuals/Detroit-Diesel/Detroit-Diesel-Series-53/Detroit-Diesel-Series-53-Service-Manual-01.pdf I would rule out the head gasket as if leaking, coolant could migrate to cylinders, then out the ports and to the air box slobber tube.

The drain valve on the air box can be fickle. It probably needed blowing out from dust and the like. Since you know the cooling system is holding pressure, monitor the air box drain. You probably raised a bunch of dust from 45 years that knocked loose. never run without a thermostat. It...

Working On The M561 Gama Goat

I would suspect the engine ingested a bunch of coolant vapor when the belts failed, this accumulated in the air box and it just needs to drain over time as the leak down function only functions when the air box has no pressure..with the engine off.

Yes, he has lights. Plus the ones out of my SECM, when I get time. The Goat has lots of room under the bonnet but so does a CUCV and doing all belts on that can be a chore.

Hindsight 20/20, DOT3 brake fluid and pressure washer to remove paint? After this spring, those chips would be buried in tall grass [thumbzup].
