11.00R20's ? T831 vs G177 ? ?

So looking for tires for the nephews M48 w/w tractor project, Seems like there is only 2 radial tire choices T831's and G177's . . . Other wise the GI-Biasply.

The T831 looks more aggressive than the G177 other than that is much of a difference ?

They will be ran dueled in rear.

He really wants the T831's but i seem to be finding the G177's, Those i have NOT ran acrossed at all . . . Mount ten of those on 6lug wheels and toss them under his truck would look sweet !

The xl's are older surplus, these came off a deuce that came from gl recently,i see them range from 100.00 to 150.00 ea in good condition, they also do well off road.
It's a good idea to put a higher load range rated tire on the front of the winch deuce,with all that extra weight up front, the ndt 900-20's are kinda maxed out.uploadfromtaptalk1354645994560.jpg

Oh it hasn't had 9.00-20s on it since 1985, Its 1953 REO brand truck with the 331 gasser engine. Its got front and rear mounted winches. Town of Stockton flip'd the hubs and made it SRW and mounted a modified phone maintenance bed on it. So it's been rolling on 11.00s for almost 30yrs now. The bed is getting removed its rusty and been altered. He likes the 11.00s so once its flipped back to DRW configuration it will be getting ten of the 11.00s put on it. May he is on facebook I'd like to send him your photo of the rear 8 as it shows him the tread pattern and basically what his truck will look like finished. Actually I should show him both the photos as more or less his truck will the same as yours does.

The XL's in my opinion look the coolest and they get the best traction, problem is they are a little tougher to find. The 177's are more readily available and probably the cheapest.

He seems fairly set on the T831s, I don't think anything in an 11.00-20/11.00R20 is going to be cheap unless its junk or several decades old.I told him to just buy new tires but he insists "used radials will be fine" I guess the T831s and G177s both are about $6 grand a set new with tubes and flaps. So now with these XL's being proposed as an option I have NO idea what he will have to say.

I have no experience with the 831s but I ran G177s on my 925 last year and the truck was still dueled at that time, traction was darned good even with duals they ran nice and cool I really liked those tires and right now they are very reasonable prices, like 125 to 150 per tire with flap, they dont look as neat as the XLs and a truck with duals is not going to go through as much crap as a singled out one but that is just my observations!

I have a nice set of Michelin XL's in the classifieds that are in really good shape. I originally wanted a set to put on my duece but couldn't find a set, so I singled it out on 395's. Then a while later I got this set of 11 Michelin XL's. I would definately go with the michelins over the goodyear g-177's, mainly cause of the look.

I have T831's on my truck and think they are great. We are putting G177's on a friends truck. It's quite a project as they are mounted on 5 ton wheels so we're having to demount 20 tires in order to install 10. Anyhow, I consider those two in the same category. I think the G177's have more of a highway tread and could possibly last longer. The T831's have more of an off road tread design. Now onto the Michelin's, they do have an aggressive looking tread pattern but for some reason, I never could get past thinking they look goofy with the tread blocks alternating between right and left sides. They are also narrower. Could be good, could be bad. People with the Michelin's praise how good their trucks handle after the swap. People with T831's, G177's and those who have gone the 395 route complain of poor return to center and "wandering" as I have in the past. The problem is with the width of these particular tires. Research around and you'll find the easy fix when running these particular tires is to adjust the caster by removing the caster plates and grinding 5/32" off the leading edge that contacts the axle. It's a really simple job and cures that issue. I personally think the T831's look very nice on the truck but can't help but think some 395's look tougher. MDMORGAN or his wife can post some awesome pics of one of their Deuce's singled out on them and I'm thinking more and more that would be the way to go.

I can guaranty you'll never get him to SRW on tractor ;-) As for the XL's running narrow would give for better duel spacing but on the flip the fronts will wear even faster. Though he planned to rotate the fronts into the rear every so often anyway. Its what we did on the farm too. I myself love the tires they don't make any more. I liked the Goodyear Custom Xtra Grips, I loved the Firestone Super All Traction's. Though the General Super All Grips and Powerking Super Tractions were very nice tires too ;-)

Yes Sir! For when i go in hot and don't make it, i can back out!
But really..that's how i got them on the rims,and they didn't end up on the list to get them flipped.
So far i have put 1400 miles on the rig and am noticing no unusual ware, even the fronts still look real good and have yet to be rotated.uploadfromtaptalk1354765840999.jpg
They are supposedly a directional tread , i do have them facing the right way on the front, but it doesn't seem to matter on the dueled rears.
I run 80 psi in the front, and 40 or 50 psi in the rear.

I'd rotate them before you seen them starting to cup, Most wait until they see the odd wearing at that piont the tires are already ruined ! We on the farm had set rotation intervals that allowed them to be rotated without any funny wearing. Our tires seemed last longer than most.

I like having new tires "trued" but finding someone who can do this on large truck tires may be a challenge.
Really helps extend mileage life of any tire by way more than the extra cost.

It is my understanding, they quit making the 831's a while back. Hence the short supply. I had the G177's on my deuce and was extremely happy with their performance.
