Yep, they still list them. I called 2 local dealers a year ago and they confirmed they are no longer made in the 20 inch size. 22.5's were still being made. I did not ask about the 24.5's.

I just called him fast, That didn't over to well. Sounds like this '53 M48 might end up in the scraper ;-( He shouted "First the 19.5 super tractions now the Radial gripper's for 20s . . . I think I'm done with that truck" Normally "done" means it gets driven to the crusher and recycled.

Ok I got him to relax a bit now, Kid gets so worked up over stuff. So does anybody have a photo of the 11.00's in a G177 dueled on a 2.5 ton truck at all ? I think the G177s are plenty aggressive myself. I want to run a set of 177s in the 12R24.5's on an M52a1 Mack if I can ever find one that's reasonably priced.

I would have to say replica, Give it currently looks like a phone maintenance truck. But the paper work from the previous owner and receipts they got from the township of Stockton Ca. Suggest it was a DRW truck converted to SRW and the phone bed had the top choped off and installed on the truck. IMHO this thing started life as an M44 DRW cab and chassie. Got turned into hacked up phone truck for use as a service rig that is now going to become a tractor. Now according to him this truck says "M48" and "2.5 ton 6x6 tractor" with winch. There are already photos posted that I had of the truck. Down in the early deuce thread. I'm just trying to help the kid with his 2.5T 6by's ! I personally prefer the 5 ton trucks myself more to work with and easier to do so ;-)

Found your pics, I would bet money it was origionally a phone maint truck. M48's also didn't have a rear winch.

Winches can be added and removed, Now the is dated 1953 and the bed was dated 1956 or 58 So I don't believe the bed that is actually on this truck came on this truck. Besides the different dates there is a receipt for the truck and separate receipt for the bed. The receipt for the truck is dated 1962 and the receipt for the bed is dated 1985 long with a bill of sale for six 11.00-20 tires and a receipt for 6 rims. Those are the things that lead down the path of the bed being added afterward and that the truck was at that piont singled up.

I guess ultimately we can go back and forth as to what it is/was but we all know once he is done its going to be an M48 tractor with duel winch's when he is done with it. So I guess this only for our own entertainment ;-)

What is truing mean ? In reguards to tire ?
It means having the tire ground down to where it is near perfectly round. Tires from the factory
are rarely round enough and so tend to wear quicker. It may seem counter intuitive taking rubber
off but in the long run it works out better. Of course balancing should follow truing.
All of this should only be done on new tires for best pay back.

Oh ok I get it now, Making them so the full tread width is in contact with the ground. That makes sense to me I'm sure they'll wear good that way I bet. I don't think we on the farm ever really did anything like that. They did balance the heavy and medium trucks via a bag weights inside the tires. Than they were pretty much monitored for air pressure and leaks while being rotated every so often.

I believe truing is only necessary for heavy highway use.
Increased road contact is not what is really important as much as the roundness of the tire
so wear is even over the total circumference.

The wider the foot print the slower they wear, tires vary from brand to brand in size even if its the same tire. Not all 235/75R15s are the same neither are 11.00-20/11.00R20 tires. I have found the metrics are within 1/4" the standard sized tires seem to have the greatest variance 3/4"-1.5" in some sizes.
