Would it be worth it when rebuilding to cut a new way and slot to use bigger key's.....
The 2nd-3rd syncro hub has 4 keyways while for some reason the shaft is machined for only two. The two "missing" ones could only be cut using special tools since the surface of the shaft is hardened.
In all these years and having worked on so many 3052/3053s some with signs of severe use and abuse, I personally never encountered a case of keys totally sheared off but I had replaced a few showing typical deformation.
I suspect that in most cases where these keys have failed they had just used std. hardware parts made from common soft steel instead of high strenght steel alloy. It is clear that there are significant differences among materials regarding specific tensile and shear strenght and that only the best steel is good enough here.

Hey guys,

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I am a bit new to this. I have an M36 with missing 2/3 similar to this problem in this post and suspect keys (pulled the cover and the gear seems to turn freely on shaft). Mine is an old '53 with the older tranny with 1:1 5th grear (Ithink thats a 3052, yes?).

Anyway, appreciate the comment about the soft material. My unit was maintained as a coal mine service truck and I suspect what gringeltaube suggested happened, substandard hardware store stuff. Where can I get replacements? Could I just order keys from my machine supply or is there a special heat treat? Surplus?
Thanks -

Bob

Oh, also, do I have to drop the tranny to get to the gears on the 3052 or can it be done in the truck... seems to me I read that they can be accessed fron the rear? I have manuals already and looked at doing this a while ago, but got distracted on other projects. Now I'd like to transport the truck and it sure would be good to have 2/3 back again. Thanks - bob
