So I just picked up a 71 m818 yesterday and it will go into high gear and drive but when you give it to much gas it’s like it pops out of gear and just starts grinding, low gear works perfect in all five gears was told the linkage just needs to be adjusted but the outer shifting rod sits flush with the outside of the t-case can’t go in anymore. Just seeing if it could be something simple before I replace the heavy beast thanks for any input.

Did you try flushing out the transfercase, and replace the old gear oil with some fresh 80-90W that's safe for yellow metal?

Worn synchro. You can't really adjust it. Do try getting some fresh fluid in it as recommended above.
