My newely purchased 1984 M1009 CUCV spedo and odometer does not work. Is this a common thing the military does to their vehicles or is mine just busted? Any suggestions on how to fix this?

First of all, welcome to the site. As for the speedo, yours is just busted. You need to determine just what part of it broke. Cable, plastic gear in the trans, or the speedo itself. The vehicle is almost 30 years old. Things get brittle. If you keep the 1009 for any amount of time, you will be getting very familiar with virtually every system and part on it. For the most part, everything is the same as a civy vehicle of the same time. Download and read the TM's from this site. They will familiarize you with your new find.

Start with just making sure its plugged in all the way behind the speedometer and into the transfer case. A few weeks ago my speedo fell to zero while driving and stayed there. It was plugged in behind the dash so I looked under the truck. There she was a hanging, worked itself loose at the TC. Screwed it back down and I was back in business.

Yeah, it's not a military thing...just a Chevy thing. What everyone else said; check the obvious stuff first, then work your way down the check list. Also, take the cluster out and check for dust and dirt. My original cluster was full of fine silty dust. Lubing the speedo and speedo cable would be a good idea too. After 30 years, dust and dirt gum up the cable and speedometer itself.

There is also a compensator (or supposed to be anyway) between the end of your speedo cable and where it plugs into the Tcase. These are prone to failure so if everything is connected proberly and youre not getting any binding of the cable then remove the compensator and plug the speedo cable directly into the Tcase. If it starts working then, that means your compensator's gears have been stripped or there is some other issue with it.

I had a problem with my speedo to, the needle actually broke off inside the gauge and the cablle was stripped out. It would bounce back and forth between 15-60 mph while cruisning down the road. I took it to Dicks Speedo Tach in Tempe, Az and they fixed it for me and made me a new cable. I greased it with wheel bearing grease. Just pulled the actual inner cable out and had some grease in my hand i ran the cable thru as i was putting it back in.
