I have a 1985 M1008, when starting up, the small ground cable from the negative battery cable to the firewall keeps melting, any ideas on what could be causuing this? bad voltage regulator?

I would say you have a problem in the connection of the fat #2 AWG wire to the engine. Start at the front battery negative terminal, locate the #2 AWG wire on that battery terminal, trace it to the firewall. It terminates at the negative bus, on the left (driver's side) end of that bus, there is another #2 AWG wire that goes to the intake manifold. Or there should be. Check both ends. There is also an engine bonding strap around there, this bonds the engine to chassis/body.
