1986 CUCV M1008: wiring of GPR109 glow plug relay as replacement of original GPR

I just purchased a ECH GPR109 glow plug relay from NAPA. Can someone help me with the wiring scheme. Using the mounting bracket holes in a North-South orientation, does the red wire go to the top large post; and what color wire goes to the smaller terminal marked S. Any other tips welcome for the installation.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Sorry we missed this thread.

The Red wire goes on the top large post. All three orange wires go on the bottom large post.

The light blue and the pink wire go on the small posts. Doesn't really matter which one. The pink wire is the 12v hot and the light blue is the ground which is controlled by the glowplug controller card.

If your GPR109 has the "S" and "I" markings it is not the correct one.

For a quick explanation, the S and I markings are for a starter solenoid. The S is the 12V signal and the I is the ignition resistor bypass, which feeds 12V directly to the coil to get a hotter spark for starting. This means the relay's coil is grounded to the body through the mount.
A glow plug relay, or other standard relay, will have an isolated ground, with a 12V signal and a ground lug. Usually the control is from the ground lug, while the supply is either keyed hot, or always hot.

Oh, and any relay that is for a starter relay, is not designed for constant current, even if it's wired correctly. It can be used temporarily, but the relay contacts will burn out fairly quickly from the stress. That's why the Powerstroke relay is usually the best choice for a chain store alternative.

I would use a meter and confirm if it is useable or not.

They may have given you the wrong relay.

Starter relay is under the dash in the middle. You need to replace this
with a heavy duty relay simiklar to the GPR relay. See the "doghead relay mod"
Someone will hopefully post a link to his mod.
