1989 suburban 4X4 axles

I'd check online auctions and see if I couldn't get some shipped for less, or consider driving.

Too much money. You could get a 14 bolt ff with 4:10's for $100 to $200 depending on condition, a complete reman 700r4 for $1000 to $1200 depending on if you get a new torque converter and lock up solenoid, and a matching 8 lug 10 bolt for free because everyone wanting a Dana 60 would give it away for nothing because that is what it's worth. A parts truck is nice but if you really need just a couple of driveline parts, why spend top dollar for used sub par components?

Skinny, thats what I am trying to get is a Dana 60, not aware of a 10 bolt - 8 lug front axle. got 10 bolt 6 lugs now.
yes i can get rear 14 bolt ff in 4:10 here with 90 day warranty for $400 At another yard, but the yard that has the matching Dana 60 with and 14 bolt rear wants $1200 for D60 and $600 for rear with no warranty. (bronco salvage, airline dr. houston)

I am still looking, may have a line on something that is not to far of a drive.

My biggest shock in my salvage yard search is the small amount of 80's and early 90's cars that remain. Acres of cars have disappeared in last year due to scrap metal prices.

You can surely find a better deal somewhere.

A quick search of Milwaukee craigslist, I found:
-A pair of M1008 axles for $800 and a pair of Dana 60/70 axles from a M715 (5.87 gear ratio ) for $800.

-A set of 1985 3/4 ton axles for $500.

-As well as a whole 1981 3/4 GMC pickup w/o engine (in decent shape for a WI truck) for $500.

-And a pair of 10 bolts with 3.42 gears and a real rear locker. Fully loaded with springs and 32" tires for $350 (If I wasn't short on cash at the moment I would buy them and upgrade my 1009 with these axles).

Beware that all 3/4 ton trucks including Subs had 8 lug 10 bolts, no sub ever got a Dana 60.

My suburban 1991 3/4 ton 4x4 came stock with a 14 bolt with a locking differential. This is the highest GVW combination that the Suburban was offered in that year. This is the old style as the 1992 were the newer body style and drivetrain.

My 1985 3/4 was the same. The nice thing about the mid 80s suburbans is that they came stock with dual 2" exhaust, STAINLESS.. I know this as I had to replace the hangers 5 times before I got rid of the vehicle. The hanger brackets were regular steel.

So if you are at a u-pullit and see a suburban from the mid 80's the chances are better than good that there is a stainless exhaust system under the truck. Thought you should know.

I didn't know that thanks cause I completely redid mine long tube headers, true dual, 2-3/4 inch pipe, glass pack, cat-less, and cowboy tipped. Total cost including wire, gas, and choice beverage came out to around $340

I do have an axle Identification chart that i got from the Internet (www.coloradok5.com/axleguide)
according to the guide this was a d60 and 14 bolt.
I thought all the 3/4 ton 4x4 burbs got d60 and 14 with lockers just like a 1008 but i would expect different gears than 1008

I assume things and it gets me in trouble all the time.
thats the nice thing about this site. I find out new info everytime I open a thread.

3/4 ton GM trucks in the 80's could have the 8-lug ten bolt up front, pretty sure that was the case for Suburbans too. Verify before you buy.

Only the 1 tons (30 series) trucks got the 60F. Some Dodge 3/4 tons (snow commander) had a 60 F. All 73-87 trucks and 73-91 burbs rated at 3/4 ton got the 44F up till 77 1st design and the 10 bolt from there on.

 

[Skinny]

Most of the time, the only good heavy duty part out of a 3/4 ton burb is the 4L80E from the 91 model. All others have standard fare TH400 if you want a 3 speed auto. The axle are generally worthless. You are much better holding out for a K30, that is the only way to score full one ton running gear. Most 3/4 tons will have a 9.5" 14 bolt unless it is 2wd or the heavier 4wd GVW chassis. Just because it is 8 lug doesn't guarantee anything. The ONLY strength upgrade between the front end of a 1/2 and 3/4 ton pickup or burb is an extra 2 lug nuts.

I am going to keep looking, I have time. I do have a 4l80e being rebuilt at this time. I am shoping for the computer now. going to post a new thread on that so to keep to this thread.

I will keep on the hunt for the axles. my tranny will be 2 to 3 weeks and my busy time of year for work is about to start so I am parts collecting probably until September when I can do lift, tranny and x-case upgrades.
Parts to collect between now and then are:
d60 and 14bolt ff axles
203 and 205 xfer case and Ord parts for doubler
6 inch suspension lift,xfer steering. going with moslty ORD products.
Wheels and Tires (still undecided on size).

I plan to do all work at one time.

I will post my progress on my M1009 and the products i used this weekend, along with starting a new post about stand alone 4L80e computers including ones with laptop capabilities. I will do a forum search to bring myself upto speed and hopefully bring my ASSumptions down to a minimum.


I have a lot of interior work to do while I parts collect.
