2 M1009s from Shelby

Finally got around to bringing my m1009s home from Camp Shelby. I am very impressed so far, very solid with only minor surface rust, and the best part... they both run/drive great!

Both have around 50k miles showing, and 1 even came with some sort of radio still installed. Looks like a base unit for a smaller walkie talkie radio.
Can anyone tell me what the silver box is next to the radio? I found a strange bracket with a white wire in engine compartment that runs to it, almost like a coax for an antennae???

After all the horror stories I have heard about Meleta was glad I didnt have to deal with her. Was met at the lot by SPC Moody, who went above and beyond what was required of him. After asking if he minded if I changed out the batteries in one of them while still on the lot, he went and grabbed a m1031 and slave cable and jump started it. Then went with us to the other and assisted us in prepping it for the trip out.

All in all was a great 700 mile trip, with no issues at all.

Sam they look just like mine from the same auction I had to steam clean all the dust out of mine it was everywhere. I herculined the whole floor painted the seat bases and reinstalled them painted the whole underside of the truck today no rust anywhere so it was time to paint and reseal the whole underside of the truck. I masked everything today as well as prepping the whole truck for a new coat of 383 green CARC tomorrow.

The radio mount under the dash converts a walkie talkie to a vehicle mounted radio.I was an OC at Ft. Chaffee in Arkansas before I retired and we had the exact same setup. The OC Battalions at Shelby were in the same division as I was so this makes sense, the unit also charges the battery on your walkie, we called it a clamshell and I have seen several different versions along the same theme while I was in the Army, It was a motorola product IIRC, they worked off of a repeater system or point to point.the silver box looks like some kind of antenna power booster, not familiar with that.

Nice lookin trucks, some Army OC chased National Guard Toads around in that rig for sure:)

I am pretty happy with mine as well. I have no idea how they were able to get so much dust in it though. In the Navy we have "Sweepers" and "Field Day" and some other cleaning programs in place to keep things clean. I guess the Army doesn't have anything like that. The body is in good shape: one easy to pop out dent and a couple not really noticeable pin holes in the floor. I don't remember his name but the specialist that I dealt with was quite helpful. I wasn't sure how GL was able to talk them (DRMO) into doing their job (loadout) for them, isn't that what my buyer's premium pays for?

Ditto on the Motorola portable/mobile device. Was used with the Sabre portables.
No good without the portable though. We got rid of ours in the 90's.

Congrats on the nice looking M1009!

I asked the GL rep up here about that as they sold a few 1008's at Ft. Chaffee that didn't require an EUC , he said thta was determined by DRMO, I see some trailers 1008's and 1009's out there for sale that require them.

I just won a M101a2 out of hooks, no EUC and got the paid in full invoice next day.

Will get a pic posted tomorrow.

just curious, why no euc required on these
I was kinda shocked myself, was counting on the extra time to get them home.

Sounds like you made alot of progress with yours, that dust is everywhere. Might have to look into renting a steam cleaner myself. How did you go about painting the underside? I would like to as well but without a llift not sure how to get under there to do it.

And thanks for all the compliments! these 2 are solid all around. Not even any rust on the rockers like im used to seeing.

That small silver square with the white wire is an NMO antenna mount. The white wire should be a 50 ohm coaxial cable.

That silver box with the cooling fins and SO-239 ports is some sort of radio frequency amplifier. That white cable terminated on the amplifier, where does it lead? To the NMO mount or to the sabre radio clamshell?

Are there any markings on the amplifier (check the underside)? One of those SO-239 connectors connects to a radio and the other connects to an antenna.

Do you find a 3/4" hole anywhere within reach of that NMO mount?

Congratulations on the truck.

never mind sam I found the thread, Good looking trucks. Ive had a few pickups from Melitta and Ive never had any issues but she isnt real big on letting you get them running on the lot.

Have you got any plans on a restoration or are these going to be knock around vehicles.....kinda like mine.
