As I read more on the applications for filters in general, I find a few more specifications. General Filter makes an inline filter for fuel oil furnace applications. I have one that I picked up at Liquidation World, when they were still in business locally.
The specifications are for a felt 10 micron filter at 25 gph and 12 psi of pressure.

Of course, that's just what's necessary to keep from clogging a furnace nozzle at low pressure, but it gives some idea of the particle size filtration needed for a less extreme application.
