200A 24V/12V Alternator Question

I'm on my second regulator and still not getting 12VDC output. Can anyone tell me if the alternator make BOTH voltages, and needs both regulated, or does it only make 24VDC and the regulator or some other feature in the circuit converts 24V to 12V or something? This is my first dual-voltage alternator/regulator and I'm unsure of how it functions.
I don't want to keep sourcing regulators! (Yes, the original and replacement were used, but I have blown my budget with the 6.5TD swap and don't want to spend $500 on an NOS regulator a week before Christmas.)

Thanks for insights.

If you are just checking voltage at the 14v tap on the regulator, it will not show voltage. It needs to be hooked up for it to put out voltage.

Interesting. They told me they checked it, but I don't know if it was hooked up to the battery. I will have the Senior Mech check.

Thanks for the t/s guide Coug, I stumbled across it earlier myself. I hope it's not the rectifier or the 12v winding. It would be no surprise, as this TD powerpack was beat to snot when I received it.

I'll keep y'all posted.

Hopefully it's just not seeing a 12V battery is the only issue. At least with a troubleshooting guide you can say it's definitely bad when it fails, as opposed to wondering and throwing more parts at it.

Well, just now the mechanic says his #2 was in a hurry, and didn't connect the rear battery for 12V before testing. Hallelujah!
I may pick her up this weekend. Been there since July... Good, fast, cheap: pick 2.

I'll post her up in my old thread when she comes home. I think a 1" lift will be needed, as the turbo heat shields are scraping the top of the doghouse opening slightly, but I'm looking forward to driving it.

Thanks again Action and Coug for your help.
