Well......wow!!! Did I have a good time. Got to drive a few trucks I don't own (Gamma Goat from Jim Henry's, and Will Freeman's BEAUTIFUL M38A1) Spent a lot of time trying to catch up with friends, but never enough time to catch up fully with everyone (Sorry!) Oh and did I mention the weather was PERFECT the whole time with a distinct lack of bugs? Could not have written a better script.

The convoy went off without a hitch - the police escort from the gate to my driveway was impress to say the least. We had 3 motorcycle units getting to town, and then 2 additional marked cars helping us get 28 trucks through rush hour traffic together and unscathed. All I can say is my hat is off to Cpl Blackman and the rest of the Randolph County Sherrifs Dept for the best escort I have ever seen.

I sure hope folks start posting up pics and videos as I know there were a million taken........

NEXT YEARS DATES ARE SET ALREADY SO MARK YOUR CALENDARS- April 11-15 2018 (Wed- Sun). And it's NOT Easter weekend!!

I hope to see everyone there, and of course hoping some folks can join us that haven't yet !!!

I would say the 2017 Denton Rally was a great success, well I had a great time if no one else did. Being Easter weekend a lot of people came early and left Saturday but it was good to see old faces again. Would like to give a big shout out to Jim Henry for putting this on, tacticalmike for promoting it, wheelspinner for putting together the hardball convoy with police escort and BBQ dinner, gametender for bringing a truckload of firewood ( those "stories" ain't the same setting in the dark) fordmechanic for handling the T-shirts ferro for the train ride and all that came from near and far that's what makes a rally great.

And thanks for eating my cooking, sorry I couldn't cook for everyone but I'm just not equipped to do it.

Any one got pics or video of folks shooting the "noise maker"? I was busy loading and didn't get to take pics.

Had a great time, the Denton rally is a must go on the calendar for every year.

The hospitality is truly southern and the rally is the right size to get to visit with everyone.

I got to spend some more time with some folks I have not met in person before which was great.

I do have to say the education from Ferro on train operations was the highlight.

Had a great time as always. A lot goes on to put on an event like this, and those responsible have my thanks and respect.

Glad we could give the train ride. Next year we hope to do it more often and in the daylight! Billy and I got roped ( well we didn't put up much of a fight) into being the train crew most of the day. They were switching a lot of cars around and needed to work on the steamer.

The steam engine there is ex-Navy. And they bought two of the USN locomotives from Govplanet in Charleston, SC (same lot mine came from) so they are MVs.

Thanks to Mike for cooking!

Billy got some pics from the rear of the convoy.

Gotta say Adam your turn around time at arrival to pull up the rear was impressive

The train ride is the best!!! THANKS FERRROOOOOOO. I got to jump on the train before I left and learn from the master. Very cool how these things work and actually a simple mechanical and electrical assemble. I did not know that basically Diesel engines turn a generator to produce power. The addition of the electrical motor happened in the late 20's.

The best part was the kids running to the side of the tracks once the train started coming around. The whistle signal for road crossing is called the Rule 14L

Whistle pattern.

2-Long
1-short
1-Long through the crossing

Here is some more details on the engine controls with labels. The brake system is an air brake system. Each car is connected to the brake system via quick disconnects that are basically just driven away from to disconnect. Ferro and his brother had to move the passenger cars away from the main work area and parked them on the main line. Then 2 cars had their manual brakes set. Disconnect the engine and drive away.

When we parked the engine you basically throw a chain on a metal handle under the rail wheels which serves as a wheel chock. Ron would have wanted to use one of my CUCV's but the chain works better and easier. There is a manual engine brake in the back of the cab that is set as another precaution.
