260 amp alternator

I am wanting change out the 4 batteries on my m1083a1, to a two battery set up. Should I put in 2 d8's, our is there a better option. Also, should I upgrade to a260 vole alternator

I'd suggest changing to dual batteries and worry about an alt swap if it ever fails. While the 260a alt isn't really a very practical swap (it would be very involved and the 260a dual voltage Neihoff is $$$$$) a HD commercial 200a 24v can be had somewhat reasonably. Slap on a 12v step down for the 112v circuits and you'd be done.

But if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Run the OEM alt ...it may never fail. And it will live a LOT longer if you drop to dual batteries.

btw.... 260amp is not direct swap if I recall right. You have to make some mods including moving a shock tower.

What's the cold cranking amps, etc of the battery you mentioned? When I bought my M1083A1 from D&B Equipment they had put in four Continental group 24C-HP batteries in it. I can't seem to find a spec sheet for that battery from Continental anymore.
But it says 900 cranking amps 720 cold cranking amps and reserve capacity 130.

Would it be okay to go down to two of those batteries? What about when adding auxiliary lights, 50 watt GMRS radio, stereo system etc?

The battery box is technically big enough to hold eight of that size battery if you stack them in there like Sean Filner (Fastidious Restomods) did. I could use six of them (same size or smaller in deep cycle) for the habitat if so. I've got a kilowatt of solar ready for the roof of the habitat that I will wire in a 4 series 2 parallel 48v to the inverter charger, I just need to buy the rest of the solar equipment.

Group 31 is typically between 900 and 950 CCA(0F) and are over 1100 at 32F and above. ~100AH@20hr rated capacity.

My 3116 pulls a brief peak of 290A and a sustained 157A while cranking. That was engine cold at about 60F. Cold thick oil would bump this up a little. Heat is your friend…

From a practical standpoint, a pair of 24s would probably operate the truck just fine under most all conditions, and with supplemental engine heat even into some pretty extreme ones. The cool thing about putting the house battery in with the service battery is that it is a fairly simple affair to draw power from the house in a pinch. I maintain a vehicle that has this capability with a push of a button on the dash to activate a cross-tie solenoid from house to service for start assist.

You can also fit 8 group 31’s in the LMTV box, but you must remove the pockets in the battery box top. That is my plan, 2 for service batteries with 3 more serial pairs in parallel for a 300AH@24V house battery

As for adding electrical load, the alternator is your power source, the batteries are just a storage device(And ultimately a load). How long you want to operate the load without the engine running, thats an important question for battery size, but once the engine is running, your alternator needs to power those loads in addition to replacing the power drained from the batteries. It is important to plan this relationship so the alternator is not overloaded for sustained periods of time with a deeply discharged battery. That is the mistake they made with the four 6T, 240AH battery bank paired with only a 100A dual volt alt(basically a pair of 50A alts)...

Where is the 12v lead hooked now? If you have four group 31s installed like the original 6T batteries. I suspect all 4 batteries are tied together (+-+-) in the middle. That is where 12 is connected. Ground is typically furthest from the frame. 12 is where the outer 0-12 batt + terminal connects to the 12-24v batt - terminal. The +terminal on the 12-24v batyery is where 24v cables are connected and are typically the innermost/closest to the frame...

Dropping to 2 batteries is usually a matter of removing either the forward or rear pair of batteries and either taping over the unused connections or getting 2 thrubolt battery clamp terminals for ground and 24v and re- using one of the 2 terminal jumpers to tie 0-12+ to 12-24- and attach the 12v cable there. There has been some 2 batt diagrams posted recently in other posts.

I need to see the 2 batt hook up with the 100amp the 12volts hooks to the 12 volt neg side
