Just a few days ago a M1008 or 1028 , Went true ebay, with The Gentleman said he had about $40K. and may very well have. It look right! Very professional mechanical detail work. The correct CUCV Bank's turbo with the right gages, as if just came out of a box, marine IP and injector, Bully Dog propane, an NV 4500 with high dollar double clutch, NP205 transfer case, a Gear Vendor and all the necessary subsequent mod's, lift and tire/wheel.
It may have a need it a fresh paint job for 90+ points. "Not ONE bid" it started at $8K. I was more then tented, I contacted him for more info and photos but at the end. I did not bid it was too low(?), the guy was selling to go to paramedic school or something for heavens sake, and I am thinking of a ___ ?, toy and a shelter this time with a Garage !
Yup I saw that one, I sent him an email about the IP he used but he never responded.

JUST putting it out there. I email with the guy and he responded in a positive matter. He responded to ALL my questions and email photos. I am having problems transferring that file. I have a feeling it will be up for grabs again. He said the truck was purchase in 2003 from a military dealer mileage unknown, broken or/no speedometer, he list it with 50K. miles, all this components were NEW when installed by himself and other then pulling a trailer ones of over 9000# it was never hard OFF ROAD or in PULLS. It was his D/D. Front 8" Skyjacker springs & ORD zero rate, greasable bushings & stock Dana60 with SuperWinch 1/4 turn lockouts, rear 6" Skyjacker and ORD shackle flip, zero rate, greasable bushings GM 14 bolts stock with the spring bolts and plate switch around and ladder bars, Skyjacker 9000 gas shocks, X-over steering with Rock-Ram gearbox and Ram, New custom drive shafts, "everything" look new or rebuilt under the hood, the original engine was blown out so a new/remanufacture one was installed with block girdle and gears, with marine 300HP I.P. and 6.5l injectors, Bully Dog propane system, and Bank's turbo could do 12-14 psi, but limited to 9psi or less look like the single Bank's sidewinder exhaust system, and a selectable 4"-6" straight up true the hood exhaust pipe, full array of gages in place of idiots lights and then some, also said that the NP205 was also remanufacture and had ORD twin-sticks, he said everything else was new at the time of the installation, that would include the NV4500 and Gear Vendor, 37" S.S. SSR on black steel Rock Crawlers, a class 4 or 5 rear hitch, he said no rust but a few small dents , GM Brown cloth seat, good interior Alpine head unit and a few more Bom-Bom sound components.

Hey All,

As I see things the price is determined by what it's worth to you. I'm sure you have all weighed the price vs what it is going to do for you. Do you have the time, skills, space, $$$ and desire to restore a $1000 junker? Or do you want to pay $5k for a turn key that is "parade ready"?

Have the dealers gotten into the game? Yes. Has the word gotten out that these are great trucks? Yes. The dealers and private people flipping this truck do it because there is a market for them. It's good ol' fashoned commercialism. Like it or not, fabulous sites like this one are a double edged sword. It is a valuable resource for those that run these rigs and it also raises the visibility profile. The current political climate, fuel prices, cost of new rigs with the same capabilities and general gloomy outlook have also pushed many people to look into bug out vehicles. Oh, and like any great old thing, they are becomming scarce.

Who has a running count of how many "good" ones are left?? I don't think anyone does. Human nature will continue to push the price up because of these many competing drivers.

My advice, get what you want, in the condition you want, as soon as you have the means, to get the best bang for your buck. Like the price of oil these days, the price will only keep going up.

I'm going to be buying one for around $5k, but it's a southern truck with very little rust and will be "restored" with fresh paint and apholstery. For me I don't have the time to restore it myself. I do have the skills and means, but no space or time. See what I mean?

Can a guy get a duce for less? Sure, but which is more practical for your needs? Only you can answer that. I duce is not so good for plowing driveways, but will clear a highway if you need to "push thru".

Good luck and have fun with your MV treasure hunting!

One went through Camp Shelby here in MS for $3500 ( m1008 said it was running 35000miles on it). I thought it was rare, but as I see here they are going up in price. Just this week I have seen 4 on the road near me, there was only one guy a year ago. I paid $1700 for one with no rust.(m1028 ) I now have right at $4000 in mine, everything is they way I want it. already been offered $4500 for it. I will not let it go for $5500 and if I every do will regret it for as long as I live.

Part of why I have to pay such a high price way up here in the great white north is there aren't many sources for these vehicles like down south. What ever I get I will have to pay to ship up or have the "adventure" of driving it back. I'm cheap and have frequent flyer miles through work trips so I'll be going the adventure route.:-D

It is not a foregone conclusion that the price of oil will go nowhere but up.

Making an investment founded on the principal that prices will never go down is a recipe for disaster. Think housing bubble.

Im now into mine for about $3500? Guesstimate. BUT I was pretty lucky. Some others had theres "forked" all up before they were able to pick them up! Not sure what the new Tcases and transmisions not to mention new drive shafts costs. GL is getting very complacent in how they treat these rigs. Buyer beware at any price!

The axles alone are worth $1500 so $3500 for a whole truck is a good deal

I bought the M1009 because I wanted interior space. I will be swapping to the dana 60 and 14 bolt later on

Well makes sense. Basically I just need a couple/few trucks for my property. One or two 1009s for the road and highway or one or two 1008s for load hauling and such..

I know the older diesels are better at handling the biofuels from what I have read, which is important to me since I am going the Algae PBR and biodiesel route. Id like to be completely self suficient for fuel.

An older powerstroke would work but prices seem higher and these are all 4x4.

A duece is an option for a nice price but somewhat impractical, maybe an addition if money allows.

Any advice or insight on the biodiesel and these trucks???

Install a second fuel tank on the truck. Use one for "normal" operation and one for the waste/cooking oil. I start the morning with petrol-diesel. After warmup and traveling, I switch to the other tank and run from it all day. I end the day by switching to the petrol-diesel again for the last few miles of the day. I stay away from my home brewed stuff when the temps are going to be below 40-45 degrees. It gells below 40 F.

$1800 purchase price
- 450 for selling tires and wheels
$1350
$900 Wheels and Tires
$2250
$1600 Lift kit and Install

$3850 total in the truck right now, 15k miles, runs and drives great, inner fenders are a little rusty, the bed of the truck is very rusty toward the back, tailgate is about rusted out.

Oh, and it'll run 75 mph down the highway, and get good mileage doing it. Love it.

There still a pretty good bang for the buck. I've been restoring trucks for 26 years, & don't own anything newer than an 86. An awful lot of my friends have $650 or $750 a month car payments for 5 years on trucks that I wouldn't even consider trading for my m1009 or m1031. With the money you save on payments you can do an awful lot of p.m. I'm 52 & you can't compare the price of anything to six months ago... let alone several years ago. A year from now these prices will seem like a bargain...... THE GOOD OLD DAYS. My first car was a three year old 67 mustang with 50,000 miles, that I paid $100 for. I kinda doubt that will ever happen again. [thumbzup] GET ONE NOW!! JOHN

This is an interesting thread because prices guys' paid and perceptions of what is worth what, are all over the place here--- this thread should be mandatory reading BRFORE any newbies get all excited about bidding on their first vehicles.

My $.02 cents... The auctions are so unpredicatble, I did three in Barstow before an M1008 in my price range was won: $1975. But then again that was last June, back when I was still rich and stingey. It was beat-up exterior wise, but interior was perfect. PLUS, I did the pre-inspection of mechanicals and had a fairly good handle overall, that the truck was sound even with 79K miles. Though my winner has been dependable so far with only minor work done--- no telling what/when/IF some major repair will rear-up and things get really expensive.

Now-a-days- I wouldn't pay much over $2000 for any auction truck unless it was a 1010 or 1028 and really cherry. At that price you might break even just parting out a truck w/blown head gasket/trans/T-Case, whatever, and maybe make a few bucks more re-selling some stuff (cheap) to US GUYS here on SS;-)

As far as the dealers bidding things way up, there's been a few in the SoCal area that try to sell their auction wins in Auto-Trader, etc, but if you go look at these trucks you'll see that the dealer han't done anything but lipstick & make-up on these rigs and that's about it. Heck, I personally pre-inspected a few 1009's on auction last year with bad, bad, bad cancer/rust bigtime and later on, watched the bids climbing over $3500--- and wondering if the guy bidding actually knew what he was gonna' get!!!!:cookoo:

I just picked up a M1031 with 20k miles on it, Texas truck. First one of these I've owned, hope to get it in the next week or so.
Not a bad bad looking rig, mine has that same Texas Hood Rust too, strange ain't it? Just surface rust on the horizontal surfaces and otherwise, no rust anywhere else.

Mind if we know--- what did they get ya' for it?
