465 engine, which is best?

Which is the best variant of the 465, from the standpoints of power vs. reliability?
I am sure the turbo versions make more power, and better fuel economy, but I am concerned with reliability.

The LDS 465 which is intended for the five ton but finds its way into the occasional lucky deuce is supreme from the factory for the power and reliability. Remember the addage that if you don't use all the power you don't use up all the engine. This is why the deuce with the LDS is highly prized.

There is only about a 5hp difference between a LD465 and a LDT465. The biggest reason for the turbo was emissions. The LD engines smoke like freight trains, speaking from personal experience<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_approve.gif" alt="Approve"> There is a page on the net somewhere that lists the specs of the LD465, the LDT465-1C, LDT465-1D, and the LDS465, but I can't find it right off. As far as reliability goes, any of them would be fine. The NA LD465 has the least amount of moving parts since it has no turbo, but can be gutless at high altitudes. I haven't spoken with anyone who has had turbo troubles so you should be fine there as long as the engine has been taken care of.

As far as the BEST engine, the latest LDT-465-1D has some refinements with the heads gaskets that supposedly make it better. I really don't have a problem with any of the LD, LDT. and LDS motors except the LDS427 which you probably won't find anyway. As a preference I like the screaming sound of the -1C turbos on my trucks. It makes folks step back from the curb when you creep by in 1st gear at 1500 RPM. It shouldn't be a problem sneaking up on the performance of an LDS engine with proper tuning but be forewarned, if you fool with fuel rates and don't use a pyro and boost gauge, you could easily have a meltdown. I added a turbo to my most recent M35A2 and it didn't make a it of difference on performance. My tractor had the turbo added by John Winslow by the previous owner and he reported a huge gain in power. Perhaps Winslow was more liberal with the ruel rate than I was. Either way the little guy runs great and over 10,000 troublefree miles put on it by me!

OK. It looks like there is no problem if I find a nice deuce with a LD 465. It would be interesting to see what the difference is between the LDT465 and the LDS 465 from the factory. I am looking for a daily driver. I do not have any high altitude areas here in West Georgia to worry with. I am not going to be hauling a load, unless I get lucky and get to tow in another deuce from a sale! I think that with a set of lock out hubs on the front, and a lockout on one rear axle, supersingles (radials), I can reasonably expect to get around 10 mpg. on the highway. I can live with that!

You'll probably do much better than that out on the highway. Ten can be expected off road with that kind of set-up!

I drove my 6x6 home 600 miles from MO to WI and got 12 on the last 200 miles. And I think with new fuel filters and the head gaskets not leaking all over ( replacing as week speek ) I should get a bit more. Well look at it this way... even at 10 mpg your doing just as good as the chevy new big block 8.1 i think, the ford svt truck, and my pro street trans am lol.
