Hi have a military generator 4a032 has trouble starting pickup off another person heard genset run but the other person used a lot of ether to get machine going problems and issues also want to convert to electric start

The 4a032 is the motor number , what model generator is it ?

could be ignition could be fuel.
Clean everything up and see if it improves

Does it have electronic ignition on it? Have you down loaded all the TM's for this engine and gen set?

That motor did come with optional electric start, but once you get it running correctly they actually start pretty easily with the rope coil.

Electric start was an add on. I never saw one, before the late 70's, early 80's. I almost gave myself 1000 heart attacks, pull starting these engines. They ran great, or not at all.

I would wait on the Valve job. The engine is world famous for having Carburetor problems, and, as its not been converted to solid state ignition, (This alone caused more problems for the engine all by itself.) needs to be timed, and the points set RIGHT. Its a PITA. The Points and condensers need to be looked at closely. I never ever, did a valve job on one of the engines in the close to 30 years of generator repair.

Check valve clearances, not do a "valve job".

That's what I meant. Valve job. Check the valves.

But before I did check, I would do all the rest of the things mentioned. If it runs at all, the problem is not the valves.
