4wd / GEN 2 light issue

86 M1009, My GEN 2 light doesn’t come on during the starting process like the GEN 1 light does. However it illuminates along with the 4wd light when I shift into 4wd. Anyone know what might be the issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Knee jerk reaction is the wiring into the cluster tape is crossed...have you ever had it work?

I’m the new owner of it. So no idea when it possibly stopped working unfortunately.
Ok. Is it charging at 29 or so volts? Does the gage in the green? Is this your first one of these trucks?

I’d have to check what it’s charging at, however the gage is in the green. I have lots of experience operating military vehicles, but this if my first time personally owning / maintaining this type of vehicle.

That's good then it's in the green. I was thinking it would work with the light turning on. It's getting a second ground from the 4wd light. I don't think I have a cluster out right now or I'd check to see if the printed board plug is next to each other. I'll look for one I probably do. As far as this truck goes those bulbs have to be good for the alternator to charge. The voltage regulator in the alternator gives it the ground to turn on with the key. I'm assuming that the 4wd light ground is negating that with a cross in the printed board plug. I guess the only worry would be right now is it probably won't charge in 4wd so unplugging the shifter might be a quick fix until you can get to the cluster.

This is a new one I think.

As posted above each battery should have 14.4 volts with the engine running when measured separately or 28.8 volts when measured across.

I suggest getting that measurement first. If one of them is not putting out 14.4 volts. Then you can separate it from the truck wiring harness to determine if the alternator itself is bad by a simple hot wire or taking it to any auto parts store to have it tested. The -20 TM is great at taking you through how to determine if the alternator or the truck wiring is at fault.

Once you have 2 known good alternators and 2 known good load tested batteries. I think you will end up pulling the gauge cluster as suggested in a previous post. Hopefully it is just a bent tab on the big plug at the back. Which does happen.
