Does the 5 ton tractor(M52a1) and the wrecker have the same wheelbase? How much shorter are they than the cargo? Thanks

There were three lengths used on the G744 series. The shortest is the M52 tractor & M51 dump (IMHO), the next is the mid used for the M54 cargo, M62/543 wrecker, and numerous others. The long one was used on the M55 cargo, M139 bridge, and the big shop vans.
The wrecker differs from all others in that it has a walking beam rear suspension.

The short whellbase, tractor and dump is 167 inches. The cargo and wreckers have a 179 inch wheelbase. The long cargo , shop van, wrecker is 215 inches.

The wrecker frame is substantially different from the cargo truck frame, even when the same length. While the wrecker body will fit on a cargo truck - the resulting truck would not be suitable for use under the same conditions of a factory-built wrecker, which has a much more robust frame.
That being said - the tractor truck is shorter than the wrecker truck.

The crane is different. Has a 2 stage shipping for a longer reach. 26' IIRC. Don't really know about the rest of it. Attached is the line drawing. For all you guys wondering where these come from, I suggest downloading TM 43-0001-31 TACOM Data Sheets. It's here on the site and there is a guy on ebay with a bunch of them at $4 ea plus shipping. Valuable manual.
