5 Ton Winch Questions

Anyone know how long the 5/8 cable should be on a 20k winch on the front of a 5 ton? I bought 200 feet based on the deuce max of 250ft but was wondering if my 200 will be too much based it being a larger cable?

Also when I drained the passenger side of of the winch it had an lot of water in it. I can't imagine how that much water got in there. Does anyone sell the seals for where the yoke goes in? that is the only thing I can think of. I am afraid if I fill it back up with gear oil it will all leak out?

I have around 240' on mine which allows some room for a few cable plies to stack up *if* a short side pull is necessary. I need to pull mine out and pull the side off of it and reseal that. I believe that the seal at the side cover may leak and allow water to seep in. Gotta keep an eye on that because I've seen the worm gear get eaten up by sitting water in the bottom of the winch drive section...oh and the bearings too.

seals & gasket can be obtained by the main suppliers. I bought mine at memphis and they were affordable. don't forget about the brake band area, it holds water too! remove that cover and rock winch back & forth to drain water. I sprayed pb blast to help clean up the innerds.

Just don't put too much on there. Having plenty of room left on the drum is a good thing. The only major winch failures I've ever seen were caused by either the wrong shear pin or the cable building up on one side and busting the case. The first can be prevented by using the right shear pin and the other problem can be lessened by not having a full drum .
