From the searching I've done, the 5 ton uses 3/4 inch wire rope. True?

Can someone tell me about how much the spool will hold. Can't find that info.

Also, anyone here have a source, and or know about what it should cost?

Thanks.

i believe they use 9/16 and 250 feet. you can grab some good used stuff from a crane co. which replace theirs very often per msha regulations. i heard someone say that elevator cable is usable too. which they have to replace after so many months.

The front winch on a 5-ton uses 5/8" rope, 6x19 class. Typical winch has 200 feet of rope and the wrecker has 280 feet. THe 280 is all the rope that you want to put on them. GI rope was fiber core, the recommended replacement is IWRC. Be sure that the spelter is properly atttached, that will be the weak link. THe rope is good to roughly 40,000# (depending on materials and construction) which is just fine for a 20,000# rated winch.

Hope this helps.

6x19 is the correct winch line. It is fairly stiff, but it has good abrasion resistance. Be careful about other varities, such as the elevator rope mentioned above. It is much more pliable, because it is made up of smaller/finer strands. It is not rated for as much load as the 6x19, & has little abraision resistance. It won't hold up, & will soon have numerous wiskers (broken strands), which are a real pain, when you handle the stuff.

W/M and others, do not use elevator cable for anything other than a winch line, and always use a larger size; i.e. 3/4" where the manual calls for 5/8".
Tha reason for this is the cable is more flexible and has a rope or fiber center, for more flexibility, which translates to a smoother ride.
Under no circumstances should anyone use fiber core wire rope on a lifting (wrecker) application! Among other things, it is against OSHA regulations( I'll find them)
