I don't mean to be a smarty, and don't know your father's mechanical mindset. But if he taught you good mechanical skills, wouldn't you, the truck, and your fathers advice/memory be better served by using your skills to set the truck up NOT to blow up low-revving diesel engines? An overdrive tranny would be a great compliment to the 4.56 gears the M1008 has and give it hwy legs. Probably better MPG's to boot. Just a thought.

Guys, the truck is not going to blow up if I keep it at or below 65 mph and if it does I am fixing it.

It is said you can only tow 3000 lbs with a M1008. We both know that is with the pintle, but I am probably ruining my engine. I had a 8 ton hitch installed. I do need a trans cooler if I plan to tow much.

You wouldnt hurt the motor, it will run all day long at the governor. The motors are not as bad as most think, they just never recovered from the rep of the 5.7 converted gasser.
What Joez said...it'll run all day at the governed rpm without complaint. It won't be quiet and it won't get great mileage but you won't hurt it either.

The unfortunate thing with the 6.2 is that it is still mistakenly thought to be the same motor that GM started with, the 5.7 Olds block diesel. They truly share almost nothing in common. The 6.2 was designed and built from the ground up by Detroit diesel for GM.
Yes, you could run it at the governor for extended periods of time, but would be getting pretty bad mileage and that sucker would be loud.
Anyway, is this the right gearvendor? I don't want to call unless I am serious about buying. They don't list the K30 truck so I picked the one with the closest specs.

That would be it. After shipping and having your driveshaft shortned, figure $3500 in it if you install it yourself.

You could have a good transmission builder build a 700r4 to handle the power of the 6.2 for half that, installed.

I can't believe how many folks overlook this very worthy mod. Chief, tell these folks about how your does including mileage.

My recent experience was the convoy to the GA Rally. We ran 50 -51 on the way up and I must have gotten 15 MPG. On the way home I rann 55 to 57 and it dropped to barely 10 MPG. The 700R4 will get the 6.2 back into fuel miser RPM range and help you cruise at 65 to boot. Added bonus, deeper first gear for takeoffs.

My quest for lower rpms came in the form of $75/pc Hummer radials. If I were not so cheap I would have went with the NV4500 manual.

Don't get me wrong I love the 1008. However, I would probably buy an older 12v Cummins truck with AC before I dumped money in an aftermarket overdrive system the 1008.

Unloaded, running 65 on the highway I can get it over 20mpg down in the flatlands. Averages around 19 here the mountains due to all the hils.

The lower 1st and 2nd gears are a noticeable difference. Only drawback is that the 2-3 shift is wider, so once you downshift to 2nd on a hill you are going to stay in 2nd.

Cost me $1600 installed.

Ok, I've been reading about the 700R4 and 4L80E transmissions and now I have a headache. If I plan on keeping this truck the rest of my life, and I do, a gearvendor seems the way to go for me even if it is more expensive. That way when the day comes for an engine, I can still put the 6.5 with better parts and keep my TH400. I need to get the trans cooler too.

I know this sounds crazy, but I have no problem putting a $1000 dollar scope on a $500 dollar rifle. Thanks for all the comments.
