Hello to everyone! I have been in the process of disassembling a 96 6.5l turbo motor I bought from a local salvage yard. It has along with many of the other electronic goodies that come with the newer motors an RPM sensor in the timing cover, on the crank portion of the timing set, in front of the teeth for the chain is a small "spacer", then a ring with for equally spaced magnets for the RPM sensor. I had just planned on using the timing cover off of the motor I currently have since our trucks dont use these and it would just be one less hole to plug. When I ordered my rebuild kit, I bought one for a 96 motor but asked them if they could substitute the timing set for one of the older motors, no problem. I got what looks like a typical gasser timing set. When I took my motor to the machine shop for the work it needed, including a balance since I went with a new crank, rods, and pistons the machinist asked if there was a spacer that went between the timing gear and the rear of the balancer hub. I explained the situation to him and he said that I needed some type of spacer between the two or one or both of them could "walk", Im sure you can see how nasty that could be! I havent taken the motor currently in my truck out yet, it is a 6.5l repower done while the truck was still in service. The tech manual shows a set screw on the balancer and from the illustration in the TM I cannot tell if the timing gear has a spacer built into it or not, it does, however, show a difference between the 6.2l and 6.5l timing gears, showing the 6.5l with the RPM sensor. My civi 6.5l did not have a set screw on the balancer nor does the new one have a place for one. My question is this, is there a spacer built into the gear on these motors or is there a free floating spacer between them? I was told that Fords do that on some motors. When I asked about substituting the timing set I was given the option of 93-94 or 95 and up. If I need to, I will simply return the timing set I got for one with the reluctor on the crank gear. Im sure it will fit in the timin cover I want to use w/o the RPM sensor location.
Thanks much!
