60 amp Alternator/Generator Question

Most, but not always, when starting my 90 (6.2), the gauge will start off in the green, but after starting down the road, will climb up into and occasionally over the red, accompanied by the generator whining and if its warm, I can smell the batteries.

It generally does this when it hasn't been driven for several days, never if I've driven that day.

Is this something that adjusting the regulator will fix or do I need to look for something else.

I have not had a chance to test with a multimeter to see what exactly it is putting out when it does this.

Suggestions?

Chances are that the 50 ohm, 50 watt resistor in the regulator circuit has come apart. It's the only piece of the regulator assembly that can be repaired outside of replacing the complete regulator. If you PM me I can send you one. Other than that replacing the regulator itself isn't that hard. Six screws and it comes out the back of the alternator. Replacements can be found online or at Southern Automotive. The alternator is their AMA5104UT

First thing I would recommend you do is get the batteries tested to make sure they aren't failing. Always a good idea to check out the batteries any time you are troubleshooting electrical.

Pretty sure they are good; but will check them again.

I just went thru same problem. Regulator fixed it. Seems like I paid 145.00 delivered. Like mentioned above 6 screws 3 wires to plug up. Hardest part was removing alternator.

you don’t need to remove the Gen to replace the regulator

I thought it would be possible to replace in vehicle after I had completed the repair but wasn't sure
