Yes, the M932A2 (with winch) and M931A2 (without winch) both have the 6CTA 8.3L motor. They are great motors...and have more torque than the older NHC250s...at least IMHO. If you want pictures, I'll email them to you...but I am having trouble posting pictures to this site.

Speaking of 900 series 5 tons, I have 2 starters for them. Unknown if working, but look decent. $75 each Anyone in need? You pay shipping, or pick up.

8.3 re-powers

I always thought that these motors would make a good re-power for older 5 tons. Lighter than the 250's and more power than the multi-fuel. Anyone have any dimensions and weights for these? Are they the same length± as the multi's? If the same or less, may be able to use in 2½ trucks. Another engine that may work well would be an early DT-466 International. They have made tens of thousands of these, like the 8.3's and the exhaust is on the right and the pump on the left like a multi. A friend just bought two over the road straight trucks with boxes, and I will try to measure their lengths and look at the oil pans.

RE: 8.3 re-powers

Someone on here talked about putting a Dt466 out of a wrecked truck into there 5-ton awhile back. Not sure if they ever did....but I do know a Caterpillar 3116 250 H.P. will fit, I saw one in a 5-ton tractor once, turbo and all....

We have one in the a 5 TON cargo truck at the meseum. I used it to go to San Antiono to get my M127. I used a M197 dolly converter. It got 7.5 MPG at 62 MPH pulling the M127. Not to bad. It could use more power though. And mabye reprogram the shift points on the tranny.

I don't think you'll have much luck using the 8.3L as a repower...and it has to do with scarcity. They are as rare as hen's teeth in the surplus market. They were used widely in the civilian sector, but those motors usually have a lot of mileage on them. I just went through this while trying to find a motor for my M925A2 that was purchased without one.

With regard to the power, I find them to have plenty of torque. As I said, I owned a wrecker and that little motor would pull that truck hard through all of the gears right up to 65 mph!

ANYTHING will fit. its just a matter of finding the right saw blade and welder.

how about a 1997 Ford F-350 XLT that did have a 7.3L powerstroke? just a little idea i had
You're gonna have to do a lot of front end fabbing. You're talking about one hell of a long and tall motor to put into a tiny 3/4-1 ton truck.

After looking at the truck, I don't think it will work in the M35. The oil pan is going to hit the front diff.

Someone actually DID put an 8.3 in an early 90's F250, along with a Fuller 9 speed. There were pics of it on some message board awhile back. They had to redo the entire front frame/suspension, and major work to the firewall. It looked stock from the outside, I think it had a cowl hood but that is all. I googled to find it again but no luck. It was a few years ago so it may be gone.

It was on ebay in 03, according to this post.

M series repower

www.mseriesrebuild.com was doing conversions on the m37, 2 1/2, and 5 ton with the cummins 3.5, 5.9, and 8.3. I've had no dealings with them, have any of you? I think they are located in North Carolina, not sure. They were advertizing in the MV magazine.

For a 5 ton repower, it seems like the dt466 would be a good choice. They are approximately the same size and power as the 8.3, and have been used in everything!
