8.3 smoking after oil change

Had cummins diesels for last 20 years. This m923a2 is new to me. Had zero smoke before I changed the oil. Brand new oil and it is smoking at idle and pretty much all the time. Not heavy but it is there. Any theories?

What kind of oil did you refill it with, and did you put the correct amount in?

15w 40. 5 gallons.

May have been 5 gallons plus 2 quarts. I think I had to add a bit over 5.

LO states 20 quarts. Should be no reason to be anything over 5 gallons right? Pretty sure it was sitting level. Just wondering if too much oil. But was going by dipstick.

Follow the directions in the TM, it's real easy to get a false reading on the level. Not like your normal vehicle, just pull the dip stick out and it's right. Slowly pull it out, wipe it off and do it again slowly. Then say ****, WTF, and do it again.

Showing correct reading. Most of y'all have to add exactly 5 gallons?

If after sitting for 20 minutes the oil level is correct on the dipstick then it's right. Could some oil have spilled somewhere? A little oil could be leaking thru the turbo. Check the coolant level and take it out for a good run, really warm it up. Maybe it will correct itself.

I think it's fuel related. He changed fuel filters too....

Did fuel filters yesterday. Oil was last week. Smoking prior to fuel filters so I am pretty sure that can be eliminated.

Did you check the old oil for weight or thickness when drained? Could the old oil been old or broke down and acting as a thicker weight oil cutting down burning oil from a worn engine? Maybe the new oil acts thinner and therefore is being burnt by the engine past worn oil control rings? What about blowbye with the new oil. I feel that you have changed the oil situation somehow as it does not make sense mechanically that the engine wear and condition suddenly went to pot? Hope this helps. Mark

Well, the motor is a newer replacement so I HOPE that isn't the case. Didn't check it for weight though.
