According to the parts manual, the unit is considered an H13 (basic unit). The manual shows a 12447125/2520014092512, but only if kit 57K3498 is installed. How do you know if it is installed?, and what is the part number if it isn't installed?

Looks like there are (2) types that it could be (218 or 242). Based on searching, looks like the 242 is much more popular.

If it has a slip yoke on the rear shaft it is a NP-242, if not it is a NP-218.

H13 would be an M998A0 truck, which I believe are from before 92. If yours is a 94 then at minimum it should be an A1 or possibly an A2 variant.

If you have a 3 speed M998 then it's probably the NP218
If it's a 4 speed then it's the 242

If your truck really is an M998 not an A1 then likely 94 is when it was rebuilt.

What is the serial number of the truck?

I'm not sure where the split is but I have a 92 and a 93 and they are both basic (A0) trucks

My 91 has a NP 242 but the truck had a refit in 2008. Emergency brakes are now on the rear calipers but the DS Emergency brake rotor is still there.

That serial number would put it as a manufacture date of around 1988, so it would be an A0 truck, not an A1.

unless they did some type of retrofit, it's extremely unlikely to be anything other than the 218

wasn't sure if that s/n was changed. Looks like the unit was "redone" in 2010

Also, if it is an A0 model, would that mean it is just a 998. I don't see A0 listed as an option in the parts TM

There is no such thing as an A0, it is called a BASIC, there will be no suffix on a basic, IE M998 not M998A1.
But because it was rebuilt in 2008 it possibly has a NP242 transfer case because by then the NP218 was no longer available, it might have a 6.5L in it also easy to ID looking at the way the tach drive is bolted on the back of the block.
Just slide under it and see if it has a slip yoke tail piece on the back of the TC, that will settle if it has a 218 or 242.
On any rebuild you will have to do some investigation to see what components they used when rebuilding the truck.

I am curious where you got that it was a 1994, the serial number is for a 1989

They are often referred to as "A0" because too many people like to say "M998" whether it's an M998, M998A1 or M998A2. Calling it an A0 makes it clear that it is NOT an A1 or A2 model.

If you look at AM General's parts website they refer to the basic models as A0. They also refer to the M1123 as an M1123A2 even though that's also not a real designation, because all M1123 trucks ARE M998A2 variants.
