Some alternators simply use a transformer to change 12v to 24v. These are the ones you don't want. It's always a small 24v voltage

24v alternators are cheap in the 100amp to 200amp range from Delco. They also have remote sense alternators available. I have ran a standard 24v alternator on 12/24 trucks for a bit using the Eaton 100amp Equalizers. They run a 36amp blower unit in my 915. I drew directly from the 12v on the battery so that the remote sense would kick on when the draw from the AC was present. Rather than it being pulled from the equalizer or its control solenoids.. Upgrading your alternator feed wire would be great as 4awg is rated to 90 amps. I ran 1/0

Equalizer systems require either a 12v switch side solenoid or 24 and 12. I run both
A commercial grade 24v 200A alternator isn't exactly cheap. I have a cheaper source than these, and love it with the Bussman Equalizer on my rig.Screenshot_20210209-134533_Chrome.jpg

I find it hard to believe those are the same grade of build. But each his own.
Well they are genuine delco. Ran on commercial trucks everyday. I've got over 100,000mi on that unit there.

There 300/320 amp 12v versions are a found reasonable as well

Since this thread is all over the board on AC, I thought I would add something. If there is a way to use a 110 volt Mitsubishi split AC unit or similar, consider it. They use A LOT less energy than the roof top models. Invert your voltage. Practical? Well that depends on your set up.

There's a fella who went 48v in his M1079 hab for setting up a mini-split to run on solar. Of course he has alternative power sources but it's pretty slick. I don't recall the specifics, but I think it's also Alex from ACELA.

But there are a number of builds over on Expo Portal where folks incorporated mini's....

This has a 1cyl 6hp L70 diesel yanmar hooked to a 1500watt generator running a power inverter which runs the AC unit. It was able to be snuck under that diamond plate.
That's pretty slick.

I'd rather not run the hours up on my gen if I can afford it and my fuel cost already sucks money from the build project. LOL

Mine is a 10hp L100 that I converted from a BAPU (24v charger) via a head swap.

I'm still researching inverters (every time I find one that has massive positive reviews, I still find the typical electronics "mine blew up and customer service in in EU/China and I'm screwed" reviews. Xantrex, Victron, all the "best brands" have a lot of poor reviews (especially once something breaks).

But until I sort that out, I could run off the gen...

I got a scratch and dent 18k btu Mr. Cool 19 SEER AC/ Heat pump from Ingram air for $640 for the box camper. It IS 220 volt, BUT we will have that onboard.

A used Truckers APU unit is an option. Mine has a 30,000btu ac system. Got it for 800 used. New is 5x that. I'll likely use it very little but it will take place of a generator as well so it gives me a two for one. Have not decided if I want to plumb the AC that comes with it to the camper box or the cab. Wonder if an AC guy could help me do one or the other (NOT BOTH) switch over thing..... kinda like a mini-split set up.... hmm

Yeah, I remember you posting pics of that when you got it I think.
was assuming that was going to end up being my primary ac when needed (likely not often since not have a car with AC for two plus decades) with some help from insulation and a cooling poncho via a liquid chiller.... but have since come across a redot roof cab AC system 17,000 btu?? for 600 bucks w/compressor and all for .. not much btu but price was right. Dont have much detail yet... half the unit with the TM etc. is still at my friends house.

PS- to increase chance AC can do its thing well at only 17,000 btu..... thinking maybe to add an insulated curtain or finished wall and door to a skinny sleeper or?? behind the pilot/copilot seat cause I won't have Gunner.

This is what is on my 915. It is 58 degrees interior at 100+ outside can switch between 12v and 24v on the motor feeds so you get 6 speeds total. 7.5kw. Got on govplanet for $30 each.

The wrap vent unit is pictured that hooks to the top open section. I just stuffed a jacket in the hole to keep it from freezing you out.

Dual condensers as both are pretty small

I have a larger condenser for another truck as well just haven't put it in yet.
