air assist brakes

I have a '66 Kaiser/Jeep deuce and it doesn't appear that the air assist is working . Very hard to stop . I have it bobbed , and with no body I think it should drag the rears . I just took a short ride on a back road to check it . I have air to the cylinder from the tanks . I bled the new hydraulic lines to the rear after I bobbed it, no problems there . How do I check if the air piston is stuck or not ? And, if I bought a rebuild kit, maybe the air cylinder is no good after I get it apart ? My manual says to replace the cylinder if what I checked is O.K. Darn things aren't cheap ! Thanks for any ideas .

If you have a firm pedal but it doesn't stop worth a crap then chances are your air pack (air cylinder as you called it) is bad. Pull it off of the truck and tear it down before you order a rebuild kit. It may be too rusted up to rebuild. If thats the case then you will need a new one.

You need to bleed the whole system not just the rears. Air could have migrated up the lines and bleeding the rear only could have missed some.

He has a point here. Is your pedal spongy or firm? If it is spongy then I suggest bleeding the entire system in the correct sequence. If the pedal is firm then it's most likely the air pack.

Quick question on the "bob job". I know one truck that was bobbed, and the guys that did it, used a compression fitting to run the "service" and "emergency" glad hand copper lines TOGETHER. That is a bad thing to do. That didn't happen on your truck, did it?

You can't tie the service and emergency air line together, (ask me how I know).

Have you adjusted the brake shoes? It makes a huge difference if they are bad off.
He has way more problems than a adjustment , this is the e-mail I got .

[ I have a '66 Kaiser/jeep deuce and I didn't have any air assist when I got it . Good hard pedal though . I installed a kit in the air pac and then no brakes at all .I just installed an NOS pac and now have some pedal but still no air assist . My master cylinder looks like it has a non-vented iron cap . Is this right ? After running a lot of DOT5 thru it , now I have both rear drums leaking fluid ! Also, shouldn't I hear a puff of air when I release the brakes ? Thanks .]

It's just a guess but wheel cylinders leaking and probably didn't bleed the air-pac first . Hopefully he will post up a progress report.
